6mm PPC

I am 82 years old and limited to short distance bench rest shooting. I am getting ready for my next build and thinking of the 22 PPC or 6mm PPC. It is my understanding that these are the calibers that has the most popularity at the 100 and 200 yard range of BR shooting. I have also considered the 6mm BR but I have read that it is a cartridge more suitable for F class.

Would like opinions on which of the three is the best for my purposes. Twist rates and barrel length and anything else you might consider educational to my purpose.

Go with the 6PPC. It really is the hands down favorite for 100 and 200 yard benchrest. Barrel twist in the 13.5 to 14 range. Length will be determined by what you can use to make weight. Remember 10.5 lb. Bullets range from 65ish to 68 grains.

Welcome to the forum and to benchrest.

I won't be limited by weight, as I will not be shooting in competition except against my self. I load my own and shoot about 40 rounds each trip to the range. Go at least once a week most time twice. I generally get a new gun each year and shoot it developing loads and such just for the fun. My thought at this time is to use a Savage bench rest action and A good match grade barrel and have it bored and blueprinted on a good bench rest stock. Yes I know that there are better actions, but I have a budget I must limit myself to and I have never seen a Savage rifle that did not shoot good right out of the box but I have never owned one. Been a Remington 700 guy for a lot of years.

So without the weight limit, what would you suggest for a barrel length?

If you are looking for something that shoots great at 100-200-300 and want to only ever need to buy 1 barrel i would suggest you look at the 30BR or my favorite the 30 Major. Lots of custom bullets of the highest quality and if you decide to shoot some Score matches to 30 will give you the edge.

Regards
Rick

You might consider a 220 Beggs. There have been several shooters over the past couple of years that have had some success with it in UBR competition. There is little case prep, dies are available and it is very comfortable to shoot as well as easy to tune.

For what you can buy a used gun built on a boutique action for I'd start looking in the classifieds. Treat yourself to something nice. You can find plenty of used nice custom PPC's in the $1200-$2000 range.

What he said and never look back. I picked up a used Panda with a new unfired barrel last year. So glad I went that route. Nothing like a custom.

Didn't a 220 Beggs just take a record in UBR? It uses 220 Russian brass(Lapua), same boltface as the PPC. 6BR would be an easy boltface, and work real well at your intended ranges.

Correct. Jerry Powers set a new 100 meter record with his new 220 Beggs. I held the UBR Unlimited 100 yd and GA with a 220 Beggs for three years.
As accurate or better than a 22 PPC and much easier brass prep.

YMMV,
Rick

At last months F Match during lunch there was a Panda 6PPC on the table that just needed glass for $1200. Great deals are out there!

I am always leery of used rifles. I have seen a few that have tempted me but if I were to buy used, I would definitely need at least a barrel. Lots of good suggestions here. Especially the offer of a barrel from Martin 22-250. that's awesome and much appreciated. Please hang on to it for a while in case I need it. This will be my first truly bench rest rifle. This year I have been shooting a Remington SV 22-250. Not really satisfied with it. Put a new stock on it and a Timney Trigger but still can't make it do what I want. Last year I bought a Ruger Precision 6.5 Creedmoor and it shot a one hole group out of the box using factory ammo. I still have time to make a decision. If I am going to build, I need to get it to the gunsmith in a few months to have it ready for next year. I will take some time to look for a used gun now. Thanks for all the responses. Glad I joined this group.

I'd go 6 PPC or 30 if for score . Check out Bob at Shooters Corner in NJ
He was pres of the BR for a few yrs and a great gunsmith . He has the largest selection of used BENCHREST rifles . Great place to visit and a great guy to deal with . His selection and price of used rifles is the place to get started without the build time wait .

Nick, if you want to shoot groups that will satisfy don't consider ANYTHING other than a 6ppc..
Pick up one of those used BR rifles or I've had a couple of 700's with a ppc barrel that would amaze.
Find a BR quality smith to help you.. Billy Stevens or Mike Bryant come to mind
if you live another 80 years you'd not find anything that would please like a 6ppc.
Learn to do brass prep and load then you'll see groups that you didn't think possible..
I've been playing with this stuff for 50 years and have observed a thing or two.. Listen up !
Why do you think 99.9% of BR shooters use the 6ppc?

Take a look here for a good used 6PPC or “BR” rifle.

You can get a good shooting rifle properly set up for shooting for about $1500. Just about what you’d have in the Savage by the time you got done.

Then enjoy the shooting.
Agreed.

Totally.

And Bob White of Shooters Corner is one of The Good Guys...... OLDE SCHOOLE GOOD, like he treats the whole world like he'd treat his own Mother.

Ya' get's what'cha pays for with Bob.

And BTW, 6PPC, 6PPC, 6PPC all the way

I bought a 6br from him a while back. Trued Rem 700 shilen sm with 250 rnds. I like it better than my dasher with a bat. Smoothest action i ever saw. Found out it was smithed by a guy Claude T in North Carolina. Friend of mine bought a rifle here also which was a great deal.
