6mm PPC advice needed

At the encouragement of a close friend, I bought a pristine Sako A1 heavy barrel in 6mm PPC. I have also purchased a McMillan Benchrest stock because the factory stock was broken in shipping. I am not sure whether to just have it bedded or have pillar bedding done. I would like reccomendations for a reliable smith for these services. I want to get it right the first time. Thanks in advance!

Strongly suggest that you get that factory stock repaired or find a replacement.

That Sako is worth a lot of money as a factory rifle. Its value as a custom or modified is considerably less.

I'm not saying to not have the McMillan done. Just saying that to not have the factory-legal option would be a huge waste.

The factory stock is broken completely in half at the weakest point toward the rear of the action. My friend has it and may try to duplicate it. I have a potential line on another factory stock that is yet to be verified if in fact the fellow has it....

This is the second time I have heard the name Dwight Scott...my friend that encouraged the purchase gave me his info also...where there is smoke, there is fire!

Dwight Scott is good. Ask about how long before he can get it to you before you commit. Might not fit with your need date.

John: Why not 2 stocks: an original type and a dedicated benchrest? When/if the time comes you want to sell the rifle, install the factory stock to retain the value as being an original.

Also would give you the option of using the factory stock with a front bi-pod, or with a front machine rest with the benchrest stock.

Changing the stock is not like a permanent modification that would permanently lower the collector value of the rifle.

We're on the same page...just need to procure the factory stock. Time is on my side thankfully.

My purpose here was to get some referrals to the best person for the bedding or pillar bedding of the barreled action to the McMillan. So far Dwight looks like the man.

For a factory Sako stock of recent vintage, I would check with:

www.brownells.com and

www.accuflite.com

or put an ad in
www.sakocollectorsclub.com

or
www.gunbroker.com

I have the same rifle that has probably 5 or 6 thousand rounds through it after about 15 years and I am at least the third owner, still gets under 3/4 inch groups. Used to do 1/4 or less regularly (with factory stock). Congratulations you got a great rifle!!!

Also what fdshuster said, just get another stock. I have one of these guns and I have won several factory club matches with it, it shoots so good it has been banned from some clubs I've been to. These guns are increasing in value like nothing else I own, I would never ever sell mine, ever.
