6mm Norma Chambers - Savage 12BR vs Custom Rem

pat fulghum

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I recently purchased 2 6mm BR off this site.

I used a Hornady OAL gauge with Hornady's modified case to measure the chamber of both rifles.
I used the exact same Berger 105 Hybrid bullet in both chambers.

Here is what I came up with.

6BR Savage 12 BR
COL 2.377
Base To Ogive: 1.775

6BR Remington Action Custom
COL 2.410
BTO 1.808

It seems like the savage is has .040 less freebore before the lands.

Give that the cartridge spec is 2.441 COL, I would have to jam .064 for the Savage.

But they both seem pretty short to me. What do you think?

Any advise appreciated.

When I said "Given that the cartridge spec is 2.441 COL", I meant to say ...

"The Berger Reloading book (aka the spec) shows COAL = 2.441 for the 105 Grain bullets"

I just didn't expect that the Savage 12 BR would be so short.

If you want a longer throat in the Savage, lengthen the throat with a "throating reamer".
Or just run with what they are is fine as well.
Good Luck

You can buy a PT&G "uni throater" kit and DIY. It's very easy except that the throating reamer cuts very quickly, so measure, measure, measure. Then set your goal short of where you want to be, make the first cut, and then measure, measure, measure again. You CAN'T put the metal back into the throat, so take it slow and easy if you, like me, pretend to be a gunsmith in your home garage.
