6mm in a 788 remmy

I saw a left hand 6mm today in a 788 remington. I am well aware of model 700 guns, but what say everyone about the bolt configuration, for example. It seems to have 22" barrel, looks like 1978 manu... 469.00 with a 3x9 Nikon scope on it. Most interested in, did it work like the model 700. Thanks guys.

I have several 788,s also..they are all shooters..timney makes a trigger for them also $125.,and I do run mine near max..have it bedded, trigger done& barrel floated, you will like it

The left hand bolt guns have a RIGHT HAND PORT. I love that feature! Just one now with a kreiger barrel getting bedded. 22-250 with a 1 in 8 twist.

I'll second the extraction problems. With the rear locking lugs, the bolt springs, thus increasing head space. When the pressure goes down, the case is wedged in the chamber. That holds true for over charges but, under 52,000 CUP it shouldn't happen.

I've had two 788's both were very good guns. I both my first brand new in '68 in 6mm and it was accurate. My second was a Fajon thumb hole stock in 308W and was glass bedded. It was a tack driver. With 168 and 190's it would shoot between .3 and .5 (.3 with 190's). And it was the factory barrel.

They were very popular in the '90 for CBA matches but, I saw one get the bolt handle broken off trying to get the bolt open (they are silver soldered on so be careful).

You just need to be careful working up loads at the top end. You can get a pressure spike and lock it up. If you stay with proven loads, you should be ok.

Another fact is the action stetches alitlle when you fire.I would full length size them always.I had one in 22-250 and tried neck sizing and found that I could hardly close the bolt.I went back to full length sizing and the problem was solved.Kepp the pressures below max anfd you should be fine.I also had one in .44mag as well and am kicking myself for selling it.

Thanks for all the info so far. This one has the sights removed and the holes filled with screws. What caught my eye is the stock. It has been replaced with a thumbhole stock, cheek weld and a front cap. I mean about 3 inches in a different colored wood. Kind of nice. I reload so I can probably work up a load for it. My friend has one in a 700 BDL varmint and I have always been quietly impressed the way the 6mm shoots. I suppose I should say I have a 6br, so I am somewhat familiar with .243.....R
