6mm for ground hogs

243AI

Mine is a 12 Twist that was chambered by Dan Dowling years ago for a no neck turn Lapua case. My fireform loads were 70 Speer TNTs, and loaded with a jam, would easily shoot crazy tiny groups with little effort. I’ve shot up to 85 gr Sierra Game kings with good results, but have really grown an appreciation for the 80 Berger Varmint.

Have fun making up your mind…lots of neat 6mm wildcats out there…all with pros and cons…

While not a wildcat, I used the 243 Win for many years for ground hog with considerable success using factory 80 grain bullets in the 60's then later reloads with 75 grains bullets and eventually settling on the great Sierra 85 BTHP bullet.

6 BR, 24" length, 8 twist barrel from The Urbar Rifleman

Bergers 87 gr & 105gr VLD Hunting
87's most of the time, 105's for 15+ mph winds

The Wilson barrel that he furnishes you is very nice. I like it so much, he is making me a 20 P right now.

A 10tw 243, 6xc, or 6 CM. Either would be a cinch to load for. 75gr V max, 80gr Sierra blitz, 85gr Sierra HPBT should all shoot very well in any or all of them. JME WD

No particular favorite but I use (or used to use) 6mm-260, 6x47L & .243 AI. Doesn’t appear to be many GH’s around here.

No wildcat but a definite killing machine. Re-barreled Remington 700 Varmint Special in .243 w/ a Rock Creek heavy 8.5 Twist. Shoots 75 grn. Vmax's and the 87 grn. Vmax's . into tiny holes. Man they hit hard.

You might look at building something to run those new 80 gr ELD VT bullets. I run a 6 creed with heavies for rock chucks and prairie dogs. When the barrel dies I'll get a 6br simply for barrel life.

6 Remington Ackley Improved, 14T shilen zero freebore, 26"

80g Sierra bt Blitz at 3800, R#19, cci 250 primer

10T Douglas,26", zero freebore reamer, 3980 fps with 70g Nosler

Chucks take off on bullet impact like they have been shot out of a Circus canon!
