6mm Dasher Flash hole deburring

What is the current thinking on de-burring the flash holes of Lapua brass. I bought a K&M uniformer with a .062 cutter. In testing it, I find that it actually opens up the flash hole a bit.

What approach are y'all finding success with? Or are you just not doing them at all. Please let me hear your thoughts.

Thanks

Gerald

Gerald,

I lightly deburr the flash hole on the inside of the case. I have done this for years regardless of the brand of case - but it may be almost a waste of time with Lapua brass as it is almost without burrs. Winchester and Remington seem to have a lot of burrs and I believe they really benefit from the practice.

I do not believe in uniforming or enlarging the flash hole. My time is precious to me and I have never seen or heard of a benefit from it.

Right or wrong, I use the K&M tool. My results were that the holes were not consistent, some would get cut out quite a bit and some wouldn't get cut very much if at all. I'm up in the air as far as actual results on paper from doing so. I don't think I hurt anything by doing it really and you only have to do it once.

I do the same thing because I can. Agree there's rarely any material coming out with Lapua but sometimes, just sometimes I do see a hint of brass.

Probably just do it because I can at the same time I uniform the primer pockets on new brass. Done once and never again.

Attaching a "6mmBR norma" Lapua case (blue box) that I milled a cross section into the head.
More often then not, when measuring with pin-gauges, I find diameter variance to the flash-holes. I've seen them range from 0.056 to 0.063", and some times "oval" in shape instead of round. As a result I myself uniform the flash-hole diameters to 0.0615", and cue out any that are bigger.

I do not chamfer the flash-hole from the inside, because I feel the brass is to thin at the bottom of the primer pocket (about 0.050" thick is all), and I do not want to weaken the primer pocket by removing any brass with a chamfer.

The flash-hole in the picture pin-gauged a tight 0.058". You can see it is tapered a bit and not uniform.
