6mm Dasher and VV N150

I am near starting the build of a 6mm Dasher for F-Open.. The barrel will be a .237Bore, 1-8 Twist, to finish at 30".. The reamer is a .271 neck, with a .155 FreeBore.. I will be shooting (or at least I will try) Berger 105 Hybrids. It has been my experience with "regular" 6mmBRs, using 105-108 weight bullets, that they tend to L-O-V-E VV N150 powder. As a matter of fact, I believe that it may be the most accurate powder for the 6mmBR using the "heavies"... Taking that into account, I intend to try using N150 in the Dasher... On the "Powder Burn Rate Scale" VV N150 is considerably slower than Varget / RL-15. However, in the small 6mmBR case, it "acts" like Varget or RL-15.. Possibly in larger cases it (N150) may "act" closer to it's normal burn rate. Which brings me to THIS:

QUESTION: Has anyone tried N150 in their Dasher / BRX and if so, does it have a burn rate closer to Varget than where it falls on the burn rate charts? Additionally, if you have used it, how were your results? Thanks in advance for any information you can provide, I do appreciate it..

Pulled it up on QL it looks like RL 15 on the graph. The fill rate is more then 15 and close to the same speed. One thing I didn't like it takes just 9'' to get 95% of the speed . it could be a chamber burner. N 550 looks way better. Larry

Thank You.. I have not had that problem in a 6mmBR.. But I have had N550 eat my throat up like candy in a 6.5 x 47. I will definitely keep an eye out for that potential problem though.. Thanks again..

Burn rate charts are just suggestions, not "the truth as we know it." This one:

http://www.gsgroup.co.za/burnrates.html

- puts RL15 & N150 at nearly the same burn rate. I know in my 6HAGAR (virtually the same case capacity as a 6BR) the former produces 200 fps more than N140 with Berger's 105VLD (my 600-yard bullet choice) with equal accuracy yet both are virtually identical with the 90BT at 200 & 300 yards. With 308 for Palma, long the domain of Varget as the standard by which other propellants are judged, N150 is the preferred choice over N140 which can be 'peaky', while RL15 is also a popular alternative.

You get a chance, try IMR 8208XBR sometime. I find it's exceptionally accurate for Palma (155's), 6HAGAR (90BT, 105VLD or Hybrid) AND 6XC (105VLD and Hybrid again) out to 1,000 yards.

I have a friend who uses IMR 8208 XBR and he finds it exceptionally accurate with 105B/Tails. However, he is also moving very slow compared to Varget / RL-15.. If I can't get N150 to do what I want, I will try H4350..

Ben, so powders have different burn rates in different cases?

I thought you already had a Dasher for F-Class?

I do have a 6Dasher right now... Just building a 2nd one and once the first one's barrel burns out, I will once again make that into a regular 6mmBR... For the time being, I will have 2 Dashers..

Once you start shooting your Shehane, I know where I will be able to buy two Dashers real cheap! ;D

Well I will be shooting it the next 1000 yard match.. I took it out again at 1000 2 weeks ago and it DRILLED out there, even in the wind... BUT I am afraid you won't be getting my Dashers... I LOVE the 6mm's... There is just something about them.. No recoil, extreme accuracy, and they definitely perform admirably out to 600 yards. I will be shooting my Dasher this Sunday at 600>>> It is supposed to be windy, however, I bet it holds it's own!

I was really hoping to get out there this Sunday, but I don't think I will be able to make it. After last match, I got home and chucked up a barrel and chambered a .284 Shehane for myself. I have been playing with it some and the recoil difference between the Shehane and the big .300 is incredible. I will enjoy shooting the Shehane again. :)

Personally, I believe you will do MUCH BETTER with the Shehane you are building than with the .30cal that recoils and torques to unpleasant levels... AND I would bet that the difference in ballistics will not make THAT much difference... See if you can make it out>>>Break in your barrel with fireforming loads and just enjoy the time out there...
