6mm creedmoor new Barrel decisions

So I was breaking in my Savage 110 desert tactical in 6 mm creedmoor, I was just shy of 200 rounds through it and it had settled down speed wise. I was doing some load development at the range a couple days ago with a Magneto speed chrono. I made a very dangerous mistake and left a 14” section of cleaning rod in the bore to Align with the chrono- got distracted by speaking with another range member. I sat down and pulled the trigger- sure enough i had sent one down the barrel with the rod inserted 2-3” into the muzzle end- I took the rifle home- inspected and cleaned the bore- it has gone from shooting .5MOA to 3 MOA. It’s possible to possibly cut it down and recrown- but for the $ it would cost I think a new custom barrel is better.

The questions I have is:

1) what freedbore for Hornady 105 BTHP? I have read that a saami chamber is .183” freebore, a gunsmith said he has a saami spec reamer with .199” freebore- will this be too much for a 105 Gr bullet?

Was planning on another 7.5 twist, 26” 4 groove. I’m not a comp shooter- but a small group of us shoot steel out to 1000 yards on some farmland.

Any help/ suggestions are appreciated.

.199” would be for something like 115 DTAC’s. .140”-.150” is plenty for most of the 105-110 range.

I have experienced your pain. Mine was due to a different reason. I had just finished off a box of ammo in my Rem 700 Varminter, and I cleaned the bore. Moved to the next target and fired the first round from the next box. I didn't see a hole in the target and didn't hear the bullet strike the plywood backing. So I walked down and checked the target - no hole. As I walked back to the bench, the muzzle of the rifle looked slightly odd. It has this bronze look to it. Closer inspection revealed the bore was enlarged.

The jag on the cleaning rod had been slightly unscrewing each trip down the bore. On the last time I pulled it backwards, the jag dropped off just about an inch from the muzzle. No bulge in the barrel, and shortening the barrel 4 inches might have worked. But it had a lot of rounds down it, and that would have left 20", pretty short for a 22-250.

We both violated 1 of the 10 gun safety rules. Always check your bore for obstructions before firing. I never violate that one again. I always look, usually twice.

Most folks do this when using a laser bore sighter to set their chronograph.

I use a longer freebore in the 6 CM for 115's, 220 or so IIRC. The case needs more freebore to avoid the donut than the 6xc.

Google "338 kaboom" and see what a cleaning rod can do. I do not take one with me to the range.

PS Check the lugs on both the bolt and the action to make sure they were not damaged in the event.

I would think a 1:8 twist would be plenty for a 6 Creed unless you just want to crank up the grenade effect for hunting.

It would also be likely to shoot more accurately with a mild pressure load, if you are after better brass life and softer recoil.

Accuracy would likely be "slightly" better with a bit slower twist too.
