I have located a single shot solid floor commercial Mauser action with a very large triangular shaped all steel trigger,German made, I think) with approx 6oz super clean release, and no safety. Also no ejector. It has a Mc Gowen 24' straight 1.250' diameter 12 twist barrel marked 'premium stainless' and some numbers on the bottom. The barrel is marked 'Mc Gowen barrel 6 MM BR at about 10 O'clock just in front of the receiver. My questions are mostly about the cartridge, except for any opinions about the quality of the barrel. I believe it was installed in 1992.
-Is it the same as a 6 mm BR Remington?
-If I decide to get the rifle is it worth the money to set up to reload, or is there some good factory ammo? I reload, but have nothing for any 6 MM.
-What is a good bullet and weight for a 12 twist barrel?
-Is it probable that this thing could be a tack-driver? It appears unfired. I examined the bore with a Hawkeye borescope and found absolutely no fouling of any kind. Also no primer ring on the bolt face.
My interest in it is for hunting varmints and small game at up to 300 yds with precise bullet placement. Also, it is unlike anything else I have.
I've been shooting a long time and could muddle through, but would appreciate any advice.
Thanks, Tom
