6MM BR Remington Small Base Type S Full Die

i have savage model 12 6BR which appears to be bit tight chamber: new Lapua brass fires fine, but after firing it is tight bolt handle release: brass is trimmed and currently have the redding full length S bushing die I purchased for the brass.

I think issue is tighter chamber so wondering if any members have a :
77201 6MM BR Remington Small Base Type S Full Die they would be interesting in selling

also would appreciate direction as to where i can purchase, alot of sites do not seem to carry it or is on back order.

thank you for any help
happy holidays

You might look here----->http://www.gunstop.com/ I have bought some Redding dies and parts from this retailer and was happy with the deals.

Terry:
how would i use my 45 acp die to do this< ?
just size it normally as though i am doing 45 acp rounds, then run it again thru my redding s busing die??
i am confused,
could you explain it?

i have a set of Lee 45acp dies at home

thanks

more information:
load currently is lapua 6 br brass: 1st reload. Varget 30.0 ,berget 105 VLD target bullets, set at 1.792 measured at ogive: (0.011 jammed as measured using hornady straight gauge)
So i do not think my loads are too hot
rifle is savage model 12 6BR, round count at 172 rounds.

thanks,
khanh

I would think your best bet is to send some fired cases to Harrell's & have them make a die to accommodate your chamber, plus they are very reasonably priced. Give them a call.

You gut the die and it sizes the the base portion of the case down a little bit so it might fit better.

knguyen,
If you have a "bump gauge" check the shoulder to base of the cartridge before you size it and after. If the measurement is longer you need to adjust the die down or have .001-.002 removed from the bottom of the die if its now touching the shell holder and you cant adjust down any further because the shoulder bumping area of the die is not making enough contact. You may also back your powder charge down about a grain and see if this helps just to check. You may not think the load is hot but it may be. VARGET can change lot to lot so if you are using the load that worked with the last lot, this lot may be a little hotter causing the sticky bolt lift. Last suggestion is to take a SHARPIE and color the shoulder and the area of the case body above the extractor groove and re-chamber the sticky round BEFORE you size it to check where the interference actually is. If no marks color another sticky round the same way after sizing it and check for interference marks . Un-greased bolt lug faces can give you the feeling of sticky extraction also if they are starting to gall. Let us know what you find!

I don,t think I would shorten the die it self. I have ground the shell holder down, and that does the same thing without screwing up a perfect die. I went thru this problem a couple years ago, I think I used a 308 small base die and that worked fine. I do suspect you have blow the base area a bit wide on those cases if you have shot them with too hot a load at one point. Any pressure signs??? Also make sure the chamber is clean ...no debris.

primer look good, no flattening out of primers, pockets are nice and tight.
I had a friend run a boroscope down the barrel and barrel is pretty darn clean, no major carbon rings noted.
i will try to some loads next few days
I also used the 45 acp die with teh decapping pin removed and after doing this the brass fed nice and easy as i chambered it.
I think the loads may been a bit to hot,
but the funny things is that it shot very well: at 1oo I was able to hold 1/4 moa, and at 200 also able to hold 1/4 moa.
lots more to learn.
i have loaded up some rounds staring back at 27.3 gr varget and worked up at 0.3 gr increments up to 28.9 gr.
will let you know how this changes the bolt release after i shoot.
thanks

Phil: thanks,, i have loaded up some lighter rounds: starting at about 27.7 gr and will work up to about 29 gr.

You can use any of the SB dies listed for calipers with the standard .473 bolt face such as 308, 30/06, 243, 45 acp, 7/08, 260, ect. Just remove the decapping stem. Set your die up in the usual manner and resize the base of the brass. Once done reload with your standard 6BR dies. A lot of the 6BRX and Dasher shooters use this method.

For what it's worth, I have the same Model 12 and have not experienced a heavy bolt lift UNLESS my load is driving up the pressure. But what I've discovered is that a cheaper alternative to what you are trying to accomplish is a simple Body Die which I've found resizes .001 smaller than a regular FL sizing die, S or otherwise. BTW, don't know of you've considered it but turning your necks (however slight) will help as well. Just my thoughts.

a: i used my 45 acp die to body size it, it loads easy now
b: i have not yet learned how to neck size yet, will consider it
thanks for all your help
i will shoot the lighter loads in next days and post results
thanks

knguyen, i know this thread has some age but since i have the same model/caliber rifle with similar issues, wonder what you found to be the cause.

i have measured cases after firing, i think loads were git hot and getting brass to expand bit to much at the base, when i lowered the loads down on powder and ran it thru the 45 acp with diprimer removed , then sent it thru my redding FL bushing die it fit just fine in the chamer when i loaded it.
i went down on powder from 30 gr down to 28.3 and now it seems to be not having as much issue after firing and having bolt stiff removal
if it happens again i might just get a small base FL bushing die and see where it goes.
it is a bummer because at 30 gr varget my rifle shot very good groups
but is also now shooting also good groups at also 28.3 grm. so maybe i found the nodes that it likes.

Glad you found the problem. I found that I needed to be more careful by bumping shoulders enough for a proper fit. Once having the resizer (FL) die correctly set all's well.
