6mm BR OAL length?

Hi guys.

I am new here, and looking for some advice. I am having a custom 6BR,Norma) barrel made for my encore. it will have a 14.5" barrel, and .272-.273 neck diameter so i won't have to turn them. Question I have, so I can let the gunsmith know, is overall length. I am seeing alot of talk about 80gr. fowlers, and would consider using that bullet for the standard of the chamber and throat length. Is the base of that bullet flush with the bottom of the caseneck or can it be farther up in the neck? And what OAL length is that loaded cartridge? I realize thats kind of a broad question, but I don't have the equipment yet to figure this out myself.

I am open to sugestions as to bullets also. Barrel will have a 1-8" twist. Anyone have a better idea or suggestion, feel free to help me here.

Any particular reason for that short of a barrel in a 1 in 8 twist ?
That twist is better suited for the longer barrels with heavy bullets.
Not to say that a 1 in 8 twist won't shoot those awesome 80 grain Fowlers though.
Seating a bullet so the base of the bullet is to the base of the neck is a good place to start.
You would usually send a case with the bullet in the case where you want it, and go from there.

It is for a Encore pistol, hence the barrel length. If I would be better off with a different twist, please, I am open to suggestions. I would like to shoot bullets in the 80-90 gr. range, and the occasional lighter bullets for varmints. This is a pure paperpuncher, just to get my feet wet with the 6BR.

MY bullberry barrel is 19.5/12 twist. it shoots a .264 neck. It punches under .250 if I do my part. This barrel LOVES the 80 grain FB bullets from Fowler and Berger.

I have NO EXPERIENCE shooting comp. BR but it is an Encore and it shoots like a laser beam to me.

I would agree with bpost. Go with a 12 twist, or no faster than a 10. OAL length means nothing unless you have a magazine to deal with. What you want is about a .030" to .050" leade. That will let you use the bullets you mention, and lighter bullets too. In a 14.5" barrel, there is no point in an 8 twist since it is intended for heavy bullets and that barrel length won't let it do it's thing.

Go with Wayne and bpost, 12 twist is all you need for 80's and it will shoot bullets as low as 55's well. As for OAL, the .030-.050 leade is right on. I dont know what kind of brass you plan on using, but if it is Lapua, then a reamer for Lapua brass should be used.
