i hunt in pa.ranges are about 200 to 400 yds.using a 24 inch barrel do you feel that with 65 to 70 grain bullets this is a good caetrige?will use lupa brass.what can i expect for velocity for this also?
gary b..
At the specified ranges I would'nt discount those Nosler 55's as per Phils suggestion. Pretty good BC for that lightweight pill. Never used them on fur.
They also have a fairly short bearing length which means its usually hard to get near the lands.
The 58 V-Max is not a bad second choice. Longer bearing length but less BC. I ran em at a lowly 3650 fps with Benchmark but man what a wallop they delivered.
One of my favorites for the intended purpose is the 80 gr. Bergar flatbase# 24321 at an average velocity of 3150 fps, not a high speed, I know, but very effective. And it's a nice long bullet that should let you touch the lands and keep a lot of the bullet in the case neck. It is designated as a varmint bullet.
Have been ladder testing a few loads. It is not hard to get a 68 grain Berger up to 3500 fps without any signs of pressure in my Savage. However, it looks like 3300 is a better velocity for accuracy. 3100-3200 seems to be a good range for the 69 grain Berger. In general the 62 grain Berger did not shoot well for me. Easy to get 3500+, but the only somewhat encouraging spot for accuracy seems to be about 3400.
In any case I would suggest accuracy should be your concern, as any of these loads at any reasonable velocity is going to take care of the woodchuck.
a 6br is an awesome cartridge! I second the 58v-max bullets. I used a 6br with a 20" barrel for several seasons. my longest shot ever on a g-hog is 550yds, using that gun. at 400yds those little v-maxes will flip them over. man, I think I just talked myself into another 6br!! anyway, you never mentioned what twist barrel you had? that may make a huge difference in the bullet you use.
