6mm AR loads

I just started loading for a 6mm AR with a 8 twist 26" Hart barrel. Available info online is quite scarce. I have most of what appear to be the popular powders for this round....H335, H4895, RL15 and 8208XBR. Looking for loads using the 87 grain V-Max and 105/107 class bullets.

So far I've tested H4895: 26.0g 26.5g 27.0g and RL15: 27.0g 27.5g 28.0g with 105 grain Hornady BTHP bullets just for pressure signs since at the moment the only range I have access to is an indoor one that only goes to 25 yards. I also wanted to make sure function was acceptable, which it was with all six loads.....I used the loads on 6mmAR.com as a baseline and reduced as recommended for a workup. There's a good safety margin in my loads and it appears that there's plenty of room left for more performance.

What loads have you used? I suspect that 6mm Predator and 243 LBC loads will work too.

Thanks for your help

I shoot the 243LBC in a bolt rifle and I've got a mess of parts in a box I'm hoping to put together my AR this weekend. I was given a pretty good mess of load data I'll try and find it and send you a PM with the info. Like always work your way up as while they work fine in our rifles your results may vary.... probably be tomorrow before I can get you the info.

That would be much appreciated. Thank you sir!

I would concentrate on the H4985 and 8208. It is a very accurate cartridge and mine shot in the 2s while FF
8208 was the winner by a small margin in mine

good luck

Mine's a Turbo40, so I guess I won't be too much help. That said, do try RL-15, CFE223, or Varget if you have any of them laying around. They all produced good results with fire-forming loads.

Actually your load data could be of some use to me....I would adjust it accordingly for the straight 6AR of course. 20+ years of loading for various wildcats has taught me a thing or two.....Of course if you're uncomfortable sharing the data I understand that too...

I load my 6ARs full with H4895 and a Berger 105 VLDT in the 6.5 G Lapua case. It is compressed at 2.250”- so it feeds from a mag.

This same load has shot very well from three different 6 AR barrels out to 1000 yards.

For my Turbo40, Varget was the most accurate powder by a good margin. I worked with two nodes; 29.5 grains with 105 Hybrids and 108 Berger BT's and 30.3 gr with 105 Hybrids and 105 A-Max. My first barrel shot well at both nodes. My second barrel (a dog pretty much) only liked the low Varget node, and wouldn't shoot anything else across a wide spectrum of powder and bullets. I fire form with 28.0 gr of RL-15 and 87 gr Vmax, which is a little anemic, but accurate.

I pretty much load the 105 Hybrids to maximum magazine length (~ 2.300") and let them jump the rest of the way to the lands...

With Varget, you do need to keep an eye on the throat of your chamber (just in front of the case neck) as it seems to have a tendency to form stubborn carbon rings there. If they get out of hand, it can lead to pressure spikes and erratic results. I'm pretty sure that is why Whitley no longer has load recommendations for Varget on his site. I doubt its the only powder that does this, and just needs to be watched/prevented.
