6mm ar-15

Silver $$ Contributor
I have been searching the web, and still a little confused.
I have had Grendels for 12 or more years. Happy with them, but would like a little more accuracy and Shoot a little flatter.

I am finding 6mmar 40t, 6mm WOA, and 6mm Fat rat.
I was hoping to build my own upper or use myMege Megalithic upper.

Here is what I want.

Mag fed.
80-108 grain bullets, shooting out to 600 yards mostly and occasionally 1000.
Does not have to be the fastest, but be very reliable, extremely accurate 1/2moa, and easy on brass.
I would prefer working off Grendel brass.
Was hoping I could send my upper to 6mmar, but no response to email or voice mail. I'm sure they're busy.

Ideas?

Here is a group from my 308 Rem 700P. Mostly stock.

I have reamers on hand for two different 6AR chamberings.

One is a tight chamber with a long free bore @ .118". This reamer is custom made for Lapua brass only. The other is a "standard 6AR" from Whitely with a .078" freebore. The later will run Hornady brass as the previous reamer will not.

Neither require fire forming. Just re-size Grendel brass and load.

Just working up loads for my personal rifle now, with some help from and the guys here, and when I have time.

Pretty happy with these results from a morning a couple of days ago. This is the long free bore chamber in a 22" Bartlien 5R. All shots are magazine fed.

Speed is a right at 2700 fps.

I really enjoy the 6AR, since the recoil is less than the Grendels, and speed is much improved.

I can even build you a barrel, or a complete test fired upper.

PM if interested. I can provide references, and can send photos of my work.

Thank you!

It ain't 2" at 600 yards but it's a good start.

Yes, the 6mm hybrid is over 1-1/4" inches long which really consumes the little Grendel case volume. I think the hybrid is .040" longer than the VLDT.

It does shoot the hybrid very well. I just need to decide which is best - BC vs MV trade off.

It also likes the 105 Amax and the Berger 108. The 108 is a little slower than I like, but very precise and very consistent.

What fun!

I have had the 6mmar before and loved it, but eventually traded it for new projects. I now have 2 6mmar barrels waiting for reviewers to be mounted to. I'd really like to try to make a 6mmAR on a rem 700 with ptg's new bottom metal that takes AR magazines. That will probably be my next project.

I am going through a similar dilima, but I am looking at 223 based rounds. It's a shame 6mmAR doesn't sell chambered barrel/extension/bolt combos.

I know you mentioned you "prefer" to use Grendel brass, but have you considered the 6mm/223 ?

1000 Pieces of LC brass is in the neighborhood of $200, uses standard AR parts, except the barrel, and a quite a few companies make barrels for it. Les Baer even sells air gauged match barrels.

There is also the 25 x 45 Sharps. It is a 25 cal, so bullet choices are limited, but it has impressive ballistics. Barrel choices are also limited.

The problem with the 6mm-223 is case length. There is no way you can use heavier bullets in the 6mm-223 in an AR-15. You will be maxed out at about 75-87gr bullets. For match shooting that is not heavy enough to provide an advantage over other rounds. That is what makes the 6mmAR so great. The shorter fatter case allows heavy 105gr bullets to be seated mag length and still have enough case capacity to drive them over 2700 FPS and even close to 2800 fps.

The 6x45 is a great little round. The bigger 6's definitely perform noticeably better but if your just shooting it for fun it has plenty of performance. It really shines with the 95 SMK at about 2850 but unless your single loading they are way over mag length. If your shooting mag length it pretty much acts like a 308 in wind drift at long range. I regularly shoot mine in a bolt rifle out to 800+ yards. And also put 2 small bucks in the freezer with it this year. If it's for competitive shooting I would go with a bigger 6 like a Fat Rat, if it's for fun the 6x45 is just that!

The 6 Fatrat is the way to go. Single load 105-107 2850 fps out of a 26" barrel.
Lee Wells Accurate and Reliable is the go to guy.
