6mm AI VS 243 AI

Im very interested in the 6mm AI butt the smith i use does not have the reamer. Is there enough of a difference in the 6mm AI and the 243 AI to buy a reamer to get my gun built.Im looking to fire the 75 to 85grn varmint bullets at 3600 - 3800 fps .It will be my new windy day ground hog gun.Im tired of tossing .22 cal 55grn bullets out there only to have the wind blow them off target 30in at 400 - 500 yards.I know both these rounds will be hard on the barrel but i hear the longer neck on the 6mm helps.

The 6mmAI will give you about 200, maybe 300 FPS more than 243AI.
I beleave a longer neck helps barrel life. More burn time in case than barrel.

If you've already got a mid range 22 varmint rifle and want something really good as a 600 to 1000 yd varmint rifle;

Build a 6-284 on a 8 or 9 twist barrel and shoot 95gr VLD's at 3450 OR 105 VLD's and 105 A-Max's at 3350.

The next thing I have to consider is the action. The donor action i was looking to use is a Rem 700 long .Should i be looking to trade it in on a 700 SA or will the long action work just the same?
Thanks for the replies.

If you decide to go with the 6mmAI and you want a repeater, stick with the long action.

I'd advise against sticking much, if any, money into the action itself. Currently, it's better to buy a custom action than it is to accurize a factory action.

What made me choose the 243 AI over the 6mmAI is brass and that is all. Simply buy Lapua 243 Win brass turn the necks and fire form and you have brass that simply unbeatable. I get around 12 to15 firing out of the Lapua brass when only driving the 105’s and 106’s around 3200 fps. When I max out to around 3420 fps I only get 8 loadings from the cases and primer pockets open up.

If you are looking for a windy day 6mm, regardless of cartridge, why are you not thinking about using 107 or 115 match bullets?

These bullets are deadly on hogs.

The decrease in wind drift is huge.

I don't think i would trust the match bullets to kill the ground hogs clean on the spot.I'm sure with a head shot or a upper body hit they will do great but if i happen to be a little low or left to right i like the insurance of a explosive varmint round .The other thing i wonder is how the match bullets act beyond the intended target .I know the V max will blow up in the dirt but I'm not confident the match bullets will perform the same. The farms i hunt are big but i still like to know the bullet isn't going any further then its POI.

I chose a .243 A.I. over a 6mm A.I. because that was the reamer my gunsmith had. My barrel is a 1-10" twist that launches 87 grn. V-Maxes accurately and deadly. Center of mass hits on hearty PA groundhogs drop them in their tracks.

In my experiences with Sierra MK bullets they act about the same as varmit bullets on hogs. Make huge holes anywhere hit.

They have hollow points and thin jackets.

Just my opinion.

I chose a 6mm Ack because I can run any given bullet faster than a 243ACk !, .......and cuz I already have a 243Ack.
