6dasher ?

Building a 6dasher and my smith said his reamer was a .268 neck with 109 free bore am I going to be alright with this free bore with the 105 Berger hybrids in this build or do I need a different free bore ! The barrel is a Krieger 1/8 .236 bore going to finish at 28 in thanks for your advice !isaac

The .268 neck is all right, but it will not clean the neck and neck tension may vary. The free bore is short you need .125-.135. over all length should be shortened also too 1.560 for the new brass. Free bore i have now is .155 and it does well, very well. I feel after the barrel opens up too .250 groups it is done at the level you need to win at 1K,but some don't just my thoughts. ...jim

It should be a great combo. I don't know if the new Lapua brass (in the plastic box) will clean up for a .268 neck, but the old brass from the cardboard box will clean up fine for my .269 neck. I believe that a .104-.110 freebore is ideal for the 105 hybrid. Good shooting...James

The Original Poster said the REAMER has a 0.268 neck. That means he should turn his cases to give a .266 or .265 loaded round (I prefer .003 total clearance). I have a .270 neck chamber and I turn case necks for a .267 loaded round. This absolutely gives a 100% clean-up on the necks on older 'brown box' Lapua brass. Turning for a .265 loaded neck diameter should definitely give 100% clean-up on the new "blue box" Lapua brass.

I also have .268 ND Dasher reamers, and I turn my neck thickness to .011" This will clean them up fine. Tim.

I think .003 clearance is a bit much for a Dasher and i use a .266 neck and some of the new brass it just makes it.My neck thickness is .0102 and a .268 neck will be at least .001 thicker. .268 neck ..002 clearance =.266 -.2435=.0225 so half is the neck wall thickness.0112 and i find some of the new blue box less than that and some hybrids vary from that .2435. I see a difference in what people think is right, but the numbers i give work. Forum boss you run big stuff lets not mix that with the Dasher. Free bore for the hybrid should be .125-135, it keeps the heel of the bullet up above the shoulder neck area and keeps the pressure down. If your barrel likes them jumped you can't do it right with a short free bore. I use a .155 free bore and have no problem with the 105H and i'm in .010, The new reamer is .135 for the 105H and if it gives me any problem i will go back to the .155 and if you want a little more check the size of the flash holes now. Some are a lot more than .059, they are over.062 and i said some. I'm using the same brass i used all year 30 + firings at the high end it's still good.... jim

I use to run 1.5-2.0 thousandths neck clearance...I've since changed, run around 5 thous now, and am shooting better groups than ever... I also don't have to turn necks any longer! I'm also not the only one running more neck clearance and shooting great groups...look around a little and read before you settle...

I agree 100% with johara1 in regards to the free bore..running .124 and could stand a little longer for the 105 hybrids..

If you smith has a throater with 1 1/2* leade angle have him put the same bushing that he chambers with on the throater and lengthen it to .130" to .140" or a measured .021"to .031" longer freebore. I used the Reamer stop by Lambeth/Kiff to make the small adjustments for me and my customers.

Not sure what you mean. My current gun is a 6mm BRDX which is like a Dasher but slightly longer neck. As stated, I turn for .003 total clearance with a .270 chamber neck (i.e. .267 loaded round). With a .268 chamber neck, turning to 0.265 would certainly clean up the necks 100% on the blue box brass we received last week. Before turning, this blue box 6mmBR brass gave a .268 loaded round vs. .269 (before turning) for my brown box brass. YMMV. If you prefer .002 total clearance, .001 per side, that's fine, but plenty of guys are running more clearance, even some of the short range benchrest guys.

I turn to .266 for a .269 neck. .0115'' neck thickness. The last 200 blue box all cleaned up 100%. I
'm also using a .104, wish it was longer. Next one will be .180''

I have good success with .0022 neck clearance, no split necks no problems i have min. vertical at 1K and groups are small. You need longer Free bore with the 105H in the .125-.135 range. If i shoot my average at1K is 4" and as small as 2" bad is 5"but do what you want...... jim

Give us more specifics please:
- which all records - name them individually by sanctioning
- who shot them
- what were the FB's used to each one you speak of

Jim and I had a phone discussion on your post, and we both fallow the records fairly extensively ourselves. And we are not sure of what all records your are talking about. Which ones were shot with .090-FB's and which ones with .103-FB's ?

Thanks
Donovan Moran

Other individual shooters specific FB data is not mine to be made public. Look up the Williamsport records. My information came directly from some of the shooters, ask them if they want to reveal their FB data to you. Some of them are on this site. I am generalizing what several have told me. I don't know of any of them that went past a 103 FB. Check some of their articles on this site, it may be revealed. This is out of respect for them, I would expect the same.
My reamer is 107 FB and .269 neck for gold box brass. I jump some bullets.
Just trying to help. Shoot well.

Donovan,
I had mixed results with the Hybrids, I think they require more freebore. I had one barrel that shot them very well when very dirty. You may have heard last spring of Bill Brown, trying my gun, and sending 5 105H into a 7/8" group at 1000. I could not replicate that with any consistency and the big summer matches were coming fast. I still think I missed something. Bill talked me out of the barrel and smoked 1st place at the Northwest F-Class Regionals Open, past some very good shooters, with it using the 105Hs. He obviously has a good recipe.
I have generalized what many of these great shooters have personally told me at the ranges without being specific. I had a hard time getting my mind around that too. That is one reason why I ordered a 107 FB against Kiff's argument. For my shooting, it works for my bullets good enough.
My next reamer will probably be a 103-104 FB with a 268 or 267 neck as I am running out of the gold box brass in the next couple of seasons. Anybody have any extra?
Talk to the big dogs for their information. I would prefer to pm and not take up space here or hijack the thread.
You guys don't forget to enjoy your time at the range, I don't think it counts against your life span.
Greg

Thanx Tom. Take note gentlemen, straight from one of the great Dasher shooters. He earned my respect, at the range.
Greg

Thanx, I put it in the corner for next summer. I may need it shootin against the likes of you, Leo, Shatz, Hoppe, and well the list is as long as my arm. If I get some range time and improve and I may go to PA next summer before my eyes go away, wanna go for a ride... some of us are considering it. Talk to Derek, he should be ready.
Stay warm.
Greg

I see we are talking apples and oranges,I made a statement on the 105 Hybrid and you guys are talking 105VLD. If the 105H didn't shoot good for you should try an other FB. around .125+. There are a lot good Dasher shooter in the east and there are a lot of other records out side of your state.......jim

Tom,The 105H is .200 group at any seating depth at100 yds. but when you find the right seating depth it goes right in the zeros. The best part it did that with two different powders. I went from .015 in too .060 jump and i'm using a .155 Free Bore......... jim
