6Dasher? re-15 vs varget

Is re-15 giving you guys better velocity for a given charge then varget?my rifle loves 33.5 of varget but it is really hard to get in any quantity where i live but RE-15 is available in 8lb jugs.
thanx

As Mr. Moran says both powders are supposed to be the go to thing for the 6BR and the Dasher. While I do not tend to speak for anyone else my personal belief so many folks started shooting RL15 was because Varget varies so much from lot to lot. That has been my experiance at least. Rl 15 also has it's foe's as well. There is the rumor always floating around about how temp sensitive RL15 is.

There is even a story here on this board about someone blowing up a custom rifle with a rather mild load of RL15 on a rather hot day. RL15 being temp sensitive has not been my findings. I have shot it from the very mild 60's to lately were it has been 105 degrees with no signs at all of temperature sensitivity. This may have been a problem at one time for RL15 but today even on the container it says "Stable At All Temperatures".

I shoot RL15 in both my Dasher and my 6MMBR, the reason is for me it is without a doubt the best and most accurate powder. With Varget anytime I changed lot numbers I had to do all of the load work-up again. Oh I would usually find a load alright but having to redo the work-up and add x number of rounds to my match barrel was just not worth it to "ME". Especially when RL15 shoots so well in my rifles.

In a 308 size case, my lots of powders show it takes one grain less of R-15 over Varget, and H-4895 is one grain faster yet.

For anyone shooting any quantity of powder, they should be buying in bulk so you don't have to be concerned about varying lot numbers.

I've had such good luck with Varget in my Dashers, that the last couple of barrels I didn't even bother trying R-15.

I buy 6 eight pounders at a time, and if they aren't all the same lot number, I pour them in a large plastic tote, and mix them back in forth between two totes a bunch of times, and make my "own" lot number.

I ran both powders up to 33 grains in mine.

I found Varget achieved slightly better ES but was 25fps or so slowe than R-15.

I decided to run a milder load in my gun. 31.5 grains of Varget with the 105 Bergers gets me 2900fps with a 26" barrel.

Alf...you CAN NOT shoot small groups using your terrible method!!! How sloppy of you! ;)

Besides, what do you know about shooting the dasher?? ;D

Next I suppose you are going to tell us you use Fed 205M primers and use fiberglass stocks!! You can't shoot small with those, either.

See ya in a month.

Based on my personal experience both powders shoot great. But, RL-15 will drive you crazy with temp. Sensitivity. Varget is the same year round. At least for me.

I am a big fan of Hogdon H4350, it is my go to powder in the 6.5x47L case. However I am really surprised you are getting these velocity figures with it in the Dasher case. On the Powder Burn rate chart H4350 is quite a bit slower than Rl15 and for sure slower than Varget. You are certainly correct that I for one have certainly overlooked H4350 for the Dasher.

Tomorrow is Range day for me bet I don't overlook it any longer. Thanks for the tip....

Mr. Hombre, please let us know what you find about H4350 in a Dasher.

Just got back from the range a while ago. I shoot three times a week when I can. Most is just to stay in tune (Shooter tune) and i shoot almost always my Farley Actioned switch barrel f-Class rig, with a 30BR barrel installed. This way I don't shoot out my match barrel's in 6.5X47L and 6MM Dasher.

I did load last night some rounds for the Dasher with H4350. No real load work-up I loaded 10 rounds of 35 grns, 10 rounds of 36 grns and then 25 rounds with the reported 36.6. The lighter loads I shot at 300 yds just to see what they would do. Nothing ground shaking to report with these loads best I can say is they did make all the way out to 300 yds.

After seeing no issues with pressure I then went to the 36.6 grn load. Shot the first 5 at 300 yds and they shot well. The 5 shots went into a group of 1.127" at 300 yds. Then I decided to shot them at the longest distance I have at 600 yds. I put up a F-Class target and shot like in a match. i only had 20 of these left so I shot 3 sighters and then went for a match type of deal. No pit's so no feedback from the target, but it was early and there was very little wind. If this had been a match the 17 shots would have scored 168 x 9X.

Not to shabby, I think with some real load work-up H4350 might shoot pretty well. I did not get the velocity that savagedasher did but it wasn't much slower at 2970, well I guess it was slower a 100 fps is a pretty big deal. I am going to work on this load with H4350, I am pretty happy with my dasher load now with RL-15 but as is the case with most of us rifle nuts I am always chasing that Rainbow.

Thanks, Roland. I hope to see you Saturday

Thanks, As much as I hate to miss a match in Hoover this weekend I am shooting a F-Class match in Georgia. Just found out about these shoots over there and I just cannot miss a F-Class match.
