Well i have decided that my next rifle will be either a 6mm dasher or a 6x47L I am going to be building a rifle for 600 yard comps so it will most likely have an 8 twist barrel, possibly a 10 twist. I have the stock,Mcmillan f-class) and the action,Stiller Predator single shot) I am looking hight and low for a barrel without any luck. I will just have to order one if i cant find one in the next couple days. My question is what of the two calibers in question would make a better cartridge for 600 yard f-class and benchrest shooting. Is the 6mm Dasher a bit more accurate by nature, or are they pretty well equal? The 6x47 will be a bit faster of course but will it be a bit harder on a barrel. I know this really isnt a big deal what rout i go, but i just cant make up my mind!! I will be using the Forster re-loading dies as i feel they are a pretty good value. Just looking for some input from someone with more experience than my self. Thanks lee

Well given the news over in the competition forum I'd say it's pretty hard to beat a 6mmBR Improved! Barrels should last longer and the brass is cheeper too!

Try Bruno's shooting supply for a barrel.

Good Luck

Skeet,

I have a 6 Dasher, a 6XC and I had a 6BR prior to the Dasher, still have the barrel). The 6XC is very close to the 6x47L and while it's very accurate, the Dasher is the clear winner. My XC and Dasher both shoot the 105 Berger VLD's at 3,050 fps / 3,025 fps. The XC does it with 38.2 grains of H4350 and the Dasher with 33.3 grains of Varget. Shot for shot, the Dasher beats the XC. The down side is fire forming but, with an old 6mm barrel, it's no big deal to make a fire form barrel.

Build the XC as Tactical Comp rifle and the Dasher as your 600 yard F-Class Rifle but, watch out for the 6.5x284's, they wont give up much on the line.

At the recent Nationals in Sacramento, best Heavy Gun group was shot by a forum member with a 6x47L.

Other than that, the Dashers did very well.

I sold my 6 dasher to my shooting partner. It was by far superior to the 6x47 I had built. I will be building another 6 Dasher as I feel it much superior. The gun took 4th in agg in the 600 yd nationals. Louie constantly puts many shots in the sighter spot at 600. Less powder and better preformance. He has one spoter with 8 holes in it at 1000. At the 600 he put 5 in one spoter. When I built the 6x47 it was out of lazyness of fireforming brass. Stupid mistake. just an opinion

A lot depends on your 'need for speed'. A Dasher will top out around 3040 fps with a 105-grainer, and it may be more accurate under 3000 fps.

A 6-6.5x47 lets you shoot the 105s at the 'high node', around 3160 fps, and you can get 3200 with Reloder 17. That will give you far superior wind-bucking compared to the Dasher.

Both cartridges are excellent.

That brings up the age old question of what is superior wind bucking ability. The 6 in. advantage the 6x47 has over the dasher, with a 10 mph x-wind at 1000 yds, is pretty insignificant to me. That equates to .6 in. per mph. I personally think the difference has to be 10 in.'s or better to be worth looking into a larger or higher capacity cartridge.

My self and some other high scoring shooters have or had 6x47s. I still have one until this barrel is shot out. We seem to think that the odd low shots we are getting might be due to the small primer not quite having enough oomph for the longer case. Not sure, but we all have the occaisioanl low shot, maybe .25- .5 or more below the group out to 800yds or so. A few seem to think it can be finicky. I am starting to get bits together to make up a dasher, even though I have 300 fire formed, neck turned, prepped cases in 6x47.
A very slight decrease in wind drift is no good, if you get elevation shots.
On the other hand, a newer shooter, or one not scoring consistantly highly, might go better with less wind drift or pressure, if they are only trying to stay in the 9 ring.
