6CM vs 260 Rem opinions wanted

I a pair of Savage actions a Model 12 F/TR rebarreled that I use for F class and the model 10 action set up as a tactical that also make a pretty good mid range gun. Both are chambered in .260 Rem. The model 12 is needing a replacement barrel at about the 2200 round count. The groups have been gradually edging up in size over the last 500 or so rounds and what was once a .3 gun is shooting closer to .6 or .7 groups at 100. I have been watching the throat erode and chasing it but the guns sub .5 group days are gone.

My shooting ability is so so, my 300 - 800 yd scores are up in the 192 - 197 range for the most part with a occasional 170 if I make a bad wind call. Hopefully next year I will be attending some 1000 yard matches. My current load is a 142 SMK with a muzzle velocity of 2825 with 25 shot SD's of 6 - 8 FPS. Velocity at 1000 is around 1500 FPS using a BC of .6

I have been thinking about switching to 6 Creedmore or 6 x 47 Lapua but I just cannot seem to convince myself that the extra money I would need to spend would be worth it. Not only would I need the barrel but also dies, cases, bullets and various gages. I don't see much benefit vs cost wise but before ordering the barrel I thought get some second and third opinions in case I am missing something here.

Currently I shoot F-Class with a 260 Remington. I have a 30 inch medium Palma McGowen barrel on my Remington 700 in an Eliseo stock. My current barrel has about 1600 rounds on it and by the end of the season I will probably be at or above 2K. So like you I am going to have to rebarrel. I actually already have my barrel and it is a 6x47 Lapua.

The reason I went with 6X47 was that I will be 70 at the end of this year and the 260 recoil over a full day of shooting is wearing me down and I don't recover like I used to. My shooting buddy has used a 6BR and with Hornady or Nosler 105's has done pretty well. I personally feel the 6BR is just a little light for 1000 but with the 6X47 I can get a 105 Hybrid going at least 3050 or more and that actually puts it right on par with the 260 and 140 hybrids at 2840 for wind. The 6X47 has a little more recoil than my 6BR but not enough to really tire me. I persoannly think that just like the 243 Winchester, the 6 Creedmoor is a little overbore. (I know sounds like the Goldylocks story :-( ).

If I were even 10 years younger I would be rebarreling in 260 AI. The 140 Hybrids are flat awesome and if I could push them to 3K they would be hard to beat. The 6X47 is to me the next best thing.

Last winter I already had my barrel so I screwed off my 260 barrel and put on the 6x47 to fireform my brass and do some preliminary load development. MY ladder test showed 39 gn H4350 gave me 3053 speed with ES of 11 and SD 5. I don't know if there is a higher node but I will start with that data this winter and work on my match loads for next year. Time will tell if my strategy is correct.

thanks for the replies guys. There is a 99.9% chance I will stick with the .260 Rem. Also I appreciate the thoughts on the 6 x 47 and the 6 CM. Part of me wants a new rifle to develop a load for but deep down I really want to just let the chrono gather dust for awhile and concentrate only on the basics and not be distracted with load testing. I probably knew the answer before I posted but thanks for the confirmations

6mm Competition Match with 115 DTAC.

never even considered this one but I love paper stats. I am definitely re barreling the F/TR to .260 this year but a 6 competition would be a great project for next summer. I would have to get some assistance and guidance from the more experienced shooters at my home range in case forming but it would be doable. Thanks for the suggestion, I will keep it in mind

6mm Competition Match with 115 DTAC.

+1 for this!!!

I've got my 115gr loads with either H1000 or Ramshot Magnum and they are 5 shots into 3/8"
Then I can use the same settings on the seating die and powder measure to load 105gr BTHP Hornadys for short range and practice and it will still put 10 shots into less than an inch at 100 yards.

Admittedly I hate fireforming, but my fireform loads were still sub-moa.
All in all, I'm really pleased with my 6mm Comp Match.

Regards,
Ross

After a lot of thought I will stick with the 260's for long range. My last range session with my 260 tactical build reminded me exactly why I like this cartridge so much, even with a 20 inch barrel it has excellent velocity to 800. I will possibly buy used 6mm of some flavor with low round count for a mid range gun to mess with next year when my .223 gives out.

6x47 would be a good option but speed of the 243 is an edge in strong wind and you have plenty a lot of choice with
brass(Lapua,Peterson SRP,Norma...etc).Barrel life is maybe a drawback but powders like N160/N165 are a little
better to extend the barrel life.

Rule One: if it ain't broke, you can't fix it. So, just enjoy it until you break it, and have someone who knows what they are doing fix it for you. Stay with what you know.

260 AI for the win!
FF loads will shoot steel good . After youll push a 142smk jammed right around 2900 +_ use extended mag no blinder plate seat em COAL 2.975ish . .160FB youll be smilin all the way home.
This will get full B.C. out of 142smk which needs to run 2850+
Talk to the guys at Broughton BBLS They have lots of experince shooting .260 in comp , there spec will help keep pressures down and velocity up .
Best shootin
