When I send Joe Hendricks e-mails about his 6CM I always use this title,i.e. "6CM Sucks") in my e-mail because it always gets his attention.
In truth, I have had my 6CM up and running in a Remington 700 repeater tube gun for about two months and the only thing that sucks about the 6CM is if you don't hold it in the right place and pull the trigger, you hit where you pointed the rifle and not where you wanted the bullet to hit.
My comments on Joe's 6CM:
1. The case is real easy to set up and fire form, just load up 243 Win
brass, stick it in the rifle and shoot it,this part of it could not be
easier).
2. The cartridge seems to be inherently accurate, and not hard to load
for. H1000 is Joe's powder of choice, but in my rifle, with my barrel, I had better results with H4831SC. Mine is an x ring chopper for sure. A couple of days ago I took some fire forming loads to my local 100 yard range,43 gr of H4831SC, BR-2 primer and Sierra 107's loaded .015 in the lands with new Winchester 243 Win brass) and knocked out a 200/17X with irons, shooting prone with a sling. Those loads are running right around 2975 fps. The funny thing is the DTAC 115's run right about the same velocity with the same load in my rifle, and with the same accuracy).
3. H1000 turned out not to be a workable powder only because I had large E.S. and S.D. chrono numbers with the DTAC 115's. These large numbers made it clear there would be unacceptable stringing, for me) at 600 and 1000 yards,i.e. E.S. numbers averaged around 60 fps with H1000 regardless of what primer I used, and what I did for seating depth, and this is all with individually weighed powder charges). With H4831SC as a powder, the E.S. immediately came down to the low 20's and the S.D. number came down to a singe digits, under 10).
4. Joe runs a pretty short throat in the XTC version because of the need to keep the cartridge OAL within the short action magazine limits, around 2.8"), and this means the bullets are somewhat back in the case, but he's making it work and the accuracy seems to be there anyway. If you burn H1000 in this XTC chamber, you will compress the charges with heavier or hotter loadings. With H4831SC, your loads are not compressed.
5. I am running my rifle with loads around 2975 fps with both the DTAC 115's and the Sierra 107's because it's very accurate there and the cartridge is not working hard to do that, but that's fine with me. No question I can run the loads faster without pressure or issues, but I am good with a mild accurate and forgiving load, especially for across the course. Heck 2975 fps is not exactly shabby bullet performance at 600 yards with a DTAC 115, especially if it's a real accurate load, which mine is).
