6CM shooting the DAT 117s

6CM with the DAT 117s

This is a BAT action, Krieger barrel, 28”, 7.5 twist the MV with the 117s is around 3050 fps.

This rifle shoots the DAT115s and the Sierra 107s very well at 1000 yards.

I shot the 117s today at our Tuesday palma practice.

The results were very bad. I have no idea why so many of the bullets appear to be unstable and very wind sensitive.

At 800 yards the score was 150-12X with two just staying in the 10 ring.
At 900 yards the score was 146-02X big round group with very little wind.
At 1000 yards the score was 140-03X elevation and wide shots all over.

We had one wind change where four of us fired at the same time, three shooting palma rifles with 155 grain bullets all had right side eights, I had a right side seven almost in the six ring. About 50 % of the shots at 1000 yards had elongated holes, some of which you could see the point was pointing towards 5 o’clock. They did sound supersonic at the target.

For a reference on the conditions, my wife,on the same relay) shooting a 6 Dasher with Sierra 107s shot 448-27X. The last time we both shot 6mms we both had 447’s wife had 31Xs to my 26Xs and I was shooting the 6CM with DAT 115s.

Jerry,

Take a look at the green tips on your bullets. A mutual acquaintance saw that on many of his batch of 117s the polymer tips were mounted crooked. He sent the whole batch back.

Elongated hole also suggested a bullet tilt or insufficient stablization problem. Jason has theorized that if you have a tilted tip it lowers the BC, causing more drag, and then you need more initial RPM to maintain stability at 1000.

Paul:

That is why you would be better off closing the meplats on the 115s -- straight and true every time -- as opposed to the complications of inserting the tips correctly.

I would be glad to close meplats on some 115s for your comparison with the 117s. In fact, it would be fun to point up 115 Bergers, 115 DTAC, and 117s. I betcha I know what the result will be. :D
