6BRX 75gr Vmax

Gentlemen, I could use a little advice, I picked up a couple boxes of Hornady 75gr Vmax a while back, and I'm looking to load them for my 6BRX varmint rifle/truck gun.

The rifle is a Remington 700, completely factory besides the trigger and the GreTan worked, factory bolt. The barrel is a 1-8 twist, 26 inch Hawk Hill, and the freebore must be around .110 if I'm measuring correctly.

Looking to get around that 3400-3500fps and wondering what powder to use. I have alot of CCI 450s, and a couple pounds N-135, H322, and Benchmark. I've had maybe 6 different barrels on various bench rifles chambered in 6BRX and I've never used anything besides Varget. Also I've never shot a bullet besides a Berger 105vld or a 108BT. Always ran 32.2-33 grs of Varget, and I have no clue where to start with any of these other powders.

I've seen a few posts when scouring the site recommending N-135 or similar, and the general consensus being Varget for heavier bullets, and maybe somthing different for the lighter ones.

Which powder would you guys recommend to start with and what would be a good starting point? Any advice or input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

John

I've seen your posts with success with those 68gr Bergers and N-135, I have your powder charges written down as reference. Any idea on a starting charge weight with these 75gr bullets? Was gonna load in .5gr increments tonight with that N135, starting at 32.5 and go up to 34.5 maybe.

Never tried those. I would back off a couple of grains from the 80 gr. load and work up. Bearing surfaces will be different.

I found a new can of CFE 223 that I had not shot in dasher . Worked up to 3490 with 75 vmax and cci450. Shooting bugholes , so I stopped there for now. Will shoot some more when it warms up !

Went and shot quick this morning, still no chrono numbers... 7° and 10ft snow drifts at the range. Actually was kneeling down at the bench to shoot.
5 shot groups, N135, 75gr Vmax .002 OTL
34.5grs .646
35.0grs .373 - I pulled on or it would have been .1-.2

Slight signs of pressure at 35, no ejector marks, but this is definitely near max in this rifle.

I think I'm done here until it warms up, gonna load up 50rds at 34.7 or so and leave it there.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I shoot 75s Lapua gold box brass, Harrells's sizer, H335 with Rem 7 1/2, 10 Twist, .030 freebore, 28", .2374 bore dia barrel shoots bug holes at 3600-3650 fps

With a 8T and long freebore, your loads will be a lot different than mine. I also shoot the 65g V max with H335 and 7 1/2s in the realm of 3750 fps, shoots in the 2's.

55g is 4100 in a bug hole, and the preference is a Nosler Varm or Ballistic tip. Will NOT shoot 58's at all, and the blitz kings are not as accurate as the nosler...go figure?

You will not get to these numbers with a .2360 bore

I shoot a 6BR and 5BRX 14 twist. 58 to 68 gr bullets. I standardized on 8208 for speed and accuracy. It was always in the store 3 years ago? H322 is good. Varget and Re-15 decent accuracy but lower speed. Never liked Vit because of $.
