6bra water line node

NC/Br Shooter

Silver $$ Contributor
What is good about a "water line node in your targets?
I shot few yesterday checking a few things on my long range gun and saw a good 5 shot group at my high charge. It was three in a clover pattern and two touching to the right. All wholes touching. At 300.
Most of the time my high charge doesn't shot as well as my 2920 node. These are jumping as most of my loads prior all have been jammed. So Now, I'm .25 thousandths from hard jam and have a good flat weather report that's .488..
Honestly I'm gonna call it good for now but I don't know what it does at 600. It's going faster than 2920. And I guess it would do a lil better at further range. It's basically a half grain hotter and jumped instead of Jammed now

The water line term needs to go away. It came from F Class with the mentality that width in a group is all wind. Thats incorrect. Width in your groups can be the tune. And its very common. You want small and round. A touch of vertical doesnt hurt.
^^^^^^^^
This +some.

getting in a horizontal tune is a killer in Score Shooting, where even the the slightest twitch in the flags can result in a bullet hole worth of horizontal at 100, taking it off the X.

If I sense I am in a horizontal tune, I will adjust the tuner just enough to induce a little vertical.

I am wondering about a “touch” of vertical. I tried it and had a good tune window with about one-half a bullet vertical at 100 that grouped in the mid 1s. At 525 yards, the load consistently showed the vertical shooting two to three inches. I am going to continue to play with this some but have the feeling that vertical at 100 will show vertical at 5-600

Any rules about which way to turn the tuner? What distance are you shooting?

I shoot 100 and 200 yard Benchrest, The longest distance I shoot during the year is the 300 meter Tack Driver.

Most of everything I say is in relation to the Discipline I shoot and has little to do with longer ranges.

That concept predates F-class by quite a bit. More like it bled over into F-class from High Power Rifle. And to give those gents their due, when you're shooting sling and irons, 95% of the time a 'wide' group is all wind. Except for when it's a shot that broke bad.

That said, I'm not disagreeing about the rest. ;)

Man, I just had light bulbs go off in my head!!
I understand now. Yes, owl yes indeed!
I totally get it now. I see exactly what you're talking about. And why. Makes perfect sense

Jackie, I kind of figured that would be your response and certainly am not questioning what you are saying and how it applies to short range.

I am wondering if the guys that shoot long range generally see the same thing. @Alex Wheeler made a similar statement and I know he can speak to 600 and 1000 yard shooting. I understand that one gets the ultimate answer by shooting at the distance and seeing what the paper tells you. Still, for those of us that don’t have easy access to long range, is it better to tune in a touch of vertical at 100 for 600 yard loads?

I will add that I totally disagree with those that say horizontal at 100 is generally wind. I can tune in horizontal by adjusting seating depth and generally tune out vertical at 100 by increasing powder charge.

I mean a touch of vertical at the yardage. Im talking about 2" at 1k. When you see a 2"-2.5" tall x 1" wide group, you know it will agg well. Just like short range, a wide tune is a killer at long range.

I no longer tune for any amount of vertical. I try to get it as small and round as possible. I've heard all the theories but none add up to me and yes, tuners changed how I look at it. Not saying I'm right, but that it works for me.

These are both 5 shot groups at 100. Who's gonna tell me I need to re-tune that rifle? Lol!

I know a guy. He tunes for round groups at 100. He beats pretty much everyone when he shows up at 600. At least that's what they tell me.

Mike is probably shooting his Grendel or Major on that target at 100 yards. I would be willing to bet if they had they horsepower of a BRA or Dasher he would take on all comers at 600!!!!

I hope to shoot a couple of 600 yard matches this year with my 6 Grendel. It's not optimal, especially in big conditions but it shoots well. If conditions are decent, might get lucky and not do too bad. We'll see. Gotta get time to do more shooting period. I haven't been putting in the time and it shows lately.
