6BRA questions

There is currently a 6bra in the classifieds that I would be interested in for a coyote rig. I have a 6br f class rifle but I never considered or have tried shooting a light weight bullet in it. The rifle for sale has an 8 twist barrel.
Would an 8 twist work with the lighter weight 6mm bullets. I prefer to not vlow a huge hole in them but, of course, I prefer bang flop versus run off. Certainly, bullet placement is the most important issue with quick kills.
If anyone can provide any knowledge I would greatly appreciate it. If, the 8 twist would work I would be glad to receive some recommended loads as well.

As always, thanks for your help.

87 VMAXs and 85 gamekings shoot great in my 8 twist 6br and they hit hard.
Have you used them on coyotes. I would prefer to not have a lot of pelt damage but dropping them in their tracks is more important to me. I have athermal scope and it is pretty good but it certainly doesn't compare to a day scope for precision.

Looks like kyotekiller 25 has bought the rifle. From his handle that probably answered all my questions. Anyway, thanks for the info. I will know in the future.

The rifle will mainly be used for local PRS/MOA matches, and coyote stands here in EO. 8 twist will shoot the lighter bullets just fine, although I will be shooting 108 ELDMs as it will cover both my LR target/coyote needs, and I only want to have 1 load and dope chart to mess with. The 87g vmax would come to mind if it was just going to be used for dogs, and is an excellent coyote bullet that I've had great success with in 6 creed, 243, and 240 WBY over the years. It's not to bad on pelts really, typically had 1-2" exits. The 108 ELDMs are a bit harder on them from my limited amount of dogs shot with them so far from my 6 creed leaving 2-4" exits. Both bullets will anchor dogs DRT way out there, even if it's not a well placed shot.

Now I'm just stuck trying to figure out what dies and brass to go with. Not real versed on the 6 BRA and need to do a bit more research. Rifle has a .271" neck so Im hoping to get away with not turning necks. Havent decided if i want to go Alpha 6 BRA brass or Lapua 6 BR and fireform...Dies are more of the issue Im finding right now. Any recommendations on a decent off the shelf set from maybe Forster or Redding? Not really seeing much from either at this point. The rifle was just too good a deal to pass up since I was just in the beginning phase of building a 6 GT off a Kelbly Prometheus action...

You will find a recent set of posts about Alpha brass and find some people have problems with sticky bolt lift etc. I myself just sold a bunch of Alpha brassafter having serious bolt lift problems on the 3rd firing. I just received 500 pieces of Lapua and will start fire forming, a step a wanted to avoid… but they say it is the only way to go. I am not knocking Alpha… that was the most consistent brass I ever measured.. primer pockets…. Everything was darn near the same and it produced super low SDs until 3rd firing…. At a slower speed than people get out of Lapua.

I would recommend Lapua brass and Wilson dies

I realize they are pricey, but I use Short Action Custom dies in my 6 BRA. SAC's dies work a little different. There are videos on YouTube you should watch if you are considering them. Once I got them figured out, I slowly converted all of my primary cartridges to them. They work extremely well. I felt they were worth it.

Good luck,
Steve

I've used the game kings on florida deer and a couple of wild dogs. The vmaxs are more of a varmint bullet and are a little more explosive and will damage pelts. The game kings with do better on coyotes.

Thanks. I was kind of leaning towards the Lapua/FF route. Does Wilson make sizers/seaters for a Rockchucker press? I don't have an inline press.

Can you use the 6 dasher seater for the BRA, like the forster ultra micrometer seater? The only seater from Wilson I'm seeing are inline and that's not going to work for me, don't have an inline seater.

On second thought. Just talked to my smith and we're just gonna punch it out to a 6 GT. I'm not gonna mess with this whole 6 BRA die situation. $250 to rechamber to the 6 GT. Then I can just buy forster or redding 6 GT dies, lapua brass, and be done with it. Thanks fellas.

My favorite rifle for coyote hunting is an 8-1/2lb 6BR in a bolt gun. Running a 7-1/2 twist Proof barrel. Have shot the 70 Nosler Ballistic Tips(32.0grn IMR 8208XBR), the Sierra #1515 80grn Varminters(30.0grn IMR 8208XBR) and recently the 80grn Hornady ELD VT(30.0grn IMR 8208XBR).
I have shot a few coyotes with the 70grn Nosler's & 80grn Sierra's#1515 with excellent results on preserving the fur on the coyotes.
A word of caution on the Hornady 80grn ELD-VT bullets, I have had mix results, they shoot very small groups however, they don't always expand. Below is a picture of the ELD-VT shot at a 100yd target right at 3,000fps muzzle velocity. Bullet recovered from the dirt bank behind the target.

Well that ain't no good...87g vmax or 108 ELDM would never do that...
