6BRA gopher gun

So I got out to do some fireforming in my 6BRA gopher gun. Its a Bat action in a Mcmillan Nesika varmint stock with a cut down retired match barrel. I do not know what the velocity is on these fire form loads but I would bet its pretty slow based on the splat factor. These are 55 grain blitzkings in a zero freebore no turn BRA chamber. The 8 twist barrel spins those little bullets up so fast that they really come un glued. I think this was 33 grains of H322. I have some loaded up to 35.5 to shoot some groups, check velocity, and pressure.

Nice!
I love 6mm's for gophers. I have two 6mm Remingtons, a 6mm Creed, and a 243 LBC T40. The 75gr Sierra HPs at high velocity are absolutely devastating! Hit a gopher at 50 yards or less with that bullet at over 3500 fps and it's complete disintegration :)

All my other gopher rifles are 20 cal. Love the 20 cals too, but the 6mm's definitely hit harder, especially at longer distances :)

Alex. that is awesome. Do you sell this reamer?

Would it be possible to put a 80 Berger in that pic next to the 55?

I dont have an 80 berger. Send me one and I'll do it. I dont sell reamers but JGS does. Tell them you want a 6BRA reamer with a zero freebore and .272 neck. You can pm me a copy if you want me to look it over for you.

How about what is your OAL for that round from the tip? I will make one here.

What are you trying to do? That is a 55 grain bullet with very little bearing surface. They are even up the neck in a zero fb. You can just seat it to the same oal.

I am trying to get a reamer that will work for 55 to 80 grain bullets. I am not going to buy a zero and a .055 and a .110 for long bullets. I am not that interested in a 55 only reamer, but I want a reamer that will cover that range without getting into the donut. Zero might be fine. I had said I was considering a .025" to split the difference. I would be more concerned about the donut and the 80 than being able to hard jamb the 55.

So, if I had that OAL I could make a dummy here and compare them.

You wont be able to compare them with the oal. You have to go from the ogive, and not all bullets touch at the same place on the ogive. Why dont you drop an 80 grain bullet in the mail to me and I will seat it to touch the rifling in this zero freebore, then we can see how deep its seated. Send 2 so I can put one up next to it.

OK will do!!

I did a load workup for my 243 Ruger VT that I bought on the forum. The VT was my walk around gun back in my Ohio days and a saw a cherry 243 and could not turn it down. I bedded the front end of the lug and installed the Rifle Basix trigger at 10 oz and it is an honest 1/2" rifle with the 70 TNT/Varmegeddon loads I tested at 3600 FPS.

I use water bottles to test the bullets for expansion when I am plinking. A 223 Varmegeddon 55 will send a water bottle 20 feet in the air.

Shot a water bottle from 100 yards. I set the gun on the rest and raised my head to watch not through the scope. The bottle simply DISAPPEARED!!! There was a rainbow about 10 foot radius but the bottle just was GONE!!!

Went up and found the SHREDDED plastic laid out flat and sliced apart like it had been run over by a lawn mower. The bottle was 10-12 yards closer to me than it was when I shot it. The expansion had blown out the back so violently it launched the bottle back TOWARD ME.

I have never in all my days of testing varmint bullets seen that.

A full house load should send a 55 almost 3900 fps. That will throw a gopher 20 feet if you hit them right. My favorite bullet is the 60 grain seirra HP. I'll try and get video this weekend if I get out. To be honest I dont even tune these varmint rifles. anything you put in them shoot plenty good for these buggers out to 300. And with our wind 300 is a realistic limit for these small targets. I burnt 100 rounds and would say I had an 85% hit ratio out to 300. And when I left you wouldnt have known I shot even one of them. Its and infestation.

My 243 LBC has a spare bolt with a face for .473" rims. Just might have to look into doing a BRA barrel for it on that bolt.

With that long BRA neck, I bet a chamber with zero freebore could cover a wide range of varmint bullet weights/shapes and still keep them all out of the donut area.

I use h335 in my Dasher with a 55gr nosler bt. 4100 .I can't believe how well they shoot in a 8 twist .8208 works good, but I run out of room in the case .

Same where I shoot them. We'll usually shoot all day swapping between 3 or 4 rifles to keep barrels cooled down and it's like we weren't even there. Some spots it litterally looks like the ground is moving because they are so thick. I love waiting for them to line up so can get doubles and trips. It's great seeing 3 gophers flying apart in all directions with a perfectly lined up trip! :)

@urbanrifleman heres your 80 grain touching in a zero freebore. If you want to shoot this bullet I would go with a .060 fb. You wont be able to shoot the 55s but you will be able to run 60 grain sierra hp varmint bullets. Or switch to an 80 grain with a boat tail. The tips are both aligned even though from the angle I took the pic it doesnt look like they are.
