6br with 115 DTAC?

Just wondering if any one as tried them in a regular 6br and if so with what results? Ive got a kreiger barrel at 28 inches 1in8 twist?

Personally I think it's too big a bullet in a 6BR for optimum results. Not to say you can't shoot it, but it's like using a small 4 cylinder engine to power a big dump truck - you can drive it around but it isn't pretty. 1:8" twist is also right on the edge as far as twist with the 115 DTAC's.

I did a lot of testing with the Berger 115 VLD versus the old style Berger 105 VLD in a 6BR with a 31 inch 1:8 twist Krieger. The 115s made nice round holes at 1000 yards, went about 2820 fps at the muzzle, and were as accurate as the 105s; but the loss of velocity almost exactly offset the higher BC so I didn't pursue the idea further. The new Berger 105 Target VLD seems to have a lower BC so there might now be some net advantage to the larger bullets. I might try them again if I get back to the 6mm.

Top UK F-Class shooter and rifle builder John Carmichael did just this for the 2008 season with a 32" Lothar Walther 1-8" twist barrel on an RPA Quadlock in his own-manufacture HPS-TR System Gemini stock. He ran at some serious pressures and MVs with case-full loads of Viht N550. However, he loaded 115gn DTACs, not Bergers. Rightly or wrongly, the Berger VLD in this weight acquired a reputation here of having pushed the 6mm J4 jacket too far at this bullet length, while the DTAC with its heavier Sierra jacket was seen as viable.

He had some top half-dozen placings with this set-up in GB F-Class League rounds and a couple of internationals, but I think he was pushing the cartridge and rifle too far. (All matches were shot over 800 - 1,200yd with 1,000yd the norm.) In any event, John decided at the end of 2008 that he'd taken the 6BR as far as it would go, and still wasn't fully competitive. He's run the rifle as a 7mmWSM since the beginning of last year and become one of the regular top 3 place contenders as a result.

I agree fully with Robert on this bullet weight in the BR - there's insufficient boiler room to get any real benefit over the 105s, and it risks leading one astray into over-high pressures.
