6br vs creedmore, etc.

Will be (hopefully) breaking in and testing my new 6br McGowan 8tw bbl/Savage M12 next week or two. At our match yesterday, I mentioned above and was taking some incomming cause it wasn't one of the larger calibers. For now anyway, the matches are bench/rests 10@200yds, then 5@400yds, and finally 5@100yds. No siters or flags. Have read a lot of good things about 6br. Just looking for some reassurance, I guess. Will I be able to keep up with the big dogs with 6br? (excluding my abilities).

You now have one of the most inherently accurate cartridges ever devised. Not far from the ppc which right now is popular just because.Tell your creedmore buddys to stuff it. They(creedmore) are accurate but wont hang as well with the 6 br.

More than one benchrest shooter shoots the 6BR out to 1000 yds. with success. In our Southern Cal clubs the 1000 yd. line runs the gamut from 338 Lapuas to .223s. Those shooting the 6BR are good shooters and masters of wind and they do very well and win often. Use the heavy bullets and work up low ES/SD loads. Many use the CCI450 primers and about 30 gr. of Varget in Lapua brass...

100 - 400 yards? The 6mmBR will excel in that range and absolutely no need for anything bigger. If I was shooting that distance, the 6mmBR would be my FIRST pick. Maybe you meant 5 @1000 yards (not 5@100 as typed). I have watched a plurality of guys as a BenchRest match use the 6mmBR for 1000 and do well. Be the giant-killer, the 6mmBR can do the job. The reduced recoil will help your shooting as well.

I feel better :) Sounds like everything I had read, just wanted some real-world experiences. It was 5 at 100yds, Phil3. Seems the trick is to have come-ups, and downs, for those 3 yardages. Without those, even 1/4 click off, score suffers. I am going to get a better scope (maybe Weaver t36) as well. Can't wait to get it out and work up some loads. I just took a pic of the targets we use. Will post them. Thanks much. Ron.

Here are the 3 yardage targets we shoot. Winner usually about 500 points out of 525. (The first fouler shot is at a single 200 yd tgt), so 21 shots total.
Would 80-90 grain bullets handle this ok, or should I go up to 100gr+? Ron.

OK, 100 to 400 yards. The 6mmBR would absolutely be my first pick. It gives up nothing to the 6.5s (or bigger) at those ranges in my opinion. Fact is, I personally think you hold the advantage.

I say 6br all the way!! I just got home from Byers shootin the 1k br money shoot and with my new 6br agged over 6 targets a 6.2" my small few were a 3.5, 4.2 and a 4.7. And a score of 283 10x and the best score of 49-4x. So I am a straight 6br believer!

Id suggest if you werent beating the big dogs at that range you should work on your load until you do, 6br is an advantage, not a hindrance at that range. Check out some 90g bullets at shorter ranges too.

At our local varmint for score benchrest match's, fired from 100 to 500 meters, you will frequently see 6BR's dominating the top 10 scores.

6.5 Creedmore may be an excellent cartridge, only time will tell, but the 6BR has a proven history of winning now for many years.

You all have got me all fired up ;D If I don't shoot good, it won't be the rifle, I bet. Holy COW, Hoier, thats awsome. .6 moa ave at 1K, wow. Did you have to dodge those big storms the Denver libs sent out that way? ::) Waiting on Midway and Mcgowan order, both due Tuesday :) Thanks again. Ron.

If you would like more proof...go to internationalbenchrest.com and look at the match results of 600 and 1000 yard matches. Yes there are some 6.5's (not many Creedmoors though).

I shoot 6 dasher with a close friend that has a 6BR at 600 yards often. I have all to do to keep up with him and he is 76 years old and shooting an off the shelf Savage.

Best Wishes...you'll do Great!

I had it pretty rough last night, right before everyone went back to their hotels one guy measured the wind at 56.9 mph. The bad part was that I was in a tent. Haha

I have both a 6ppc and 6mmbr. I will start off by saying the ppc is a full custom based off a rem 700. the br is a prefit barreled savage model 12. so it may not be apples to apples but the ppc can drill. 25-.5" all day long at 100. thats off bags with with light wind. mo wind and its one hole all day long. the br isn't quite as good. barrel life and everything else considered I'd go br though. br for me is. .5-.75" at 100. the ppc is running a 68 grainers versus the br's 105 so at 400 the br will shine in the wind no doubt.

Ron,

6BR all the way. The 80gr and 90gr Berger's are great. The 105gr to 108gr class is great.

In my straight 6 BR, I like the Berger 87 VLD Hunting pushed with 8208 XBR. 30.5 grains is pretty mild. It will turn a coyote inside out.
