6BR vs 243Win

Looking for opinions. Building a rifle with an 18" barrel. Barrel is an 1-8" twist. Which caliber 6BR or 243Win?

This will be used for coyotes, paper, steel, and the occasional deer hunt.

That is one short barrel.

I have something like that in 6mm Rem. It's an old, old Rem 600. Still use it for deer and killed one with it last year.

They are hard to hold steady with that short of a barrel. Having said that, I like it. Use faster powder and get decent velocity with it. For you the choice of calibers would be based on ammo. If you reload, either one but I would like the BR better because of case and powder usage. If you do not reload, 243.

Plan is to run single shot and I do reload. I appreciate the input.

I know muzzle blast won't be the most pleasant as I do have a 7-08 with an 18" barrel.

Can't comment on the 6br, never owned or shot one.

Have owned and shot a bunch of 243's with barrel lengths of 20 to 26" in length. If you go with a short barrel I wouldn't go less than 20" and at least a No. 2 contour, a No. 3 even better.

I had my Rem Model 7 rebarrel with a 20" Hart barrel, No. 3 contour. I shoot 70 grain Nosler BT's behind H4895; groups under 1/2 moa. I use primarily as a predator rifle for moving from stand to stand a lot. Nice carry field rifle and extremely accurate. With the No. 3 contour, recoil is mild.

For the best combo of varmint / predator / deer I would go with a 22" barrel and use the Sierra 85 BTHP with IMR 4350. I have successfully taken varmints / predators / and deer with this bullet / powder combo. It brings out the best in the 243 as a dual purpose rifle.

I wouldn't build a rifle if I went the 243 route; I just get a Tikka T3X. With tailored handloads and a quality scope you will do just fine for hunting and the game will never know the difference:).
