6br twist

Hi! I'm new at this, so please don't beat me up too bad! I'm thinking about building a 6br (maybe a dasher?) and will be shooting 55-65 grain bullets, maybe 70 grain max. Will a 13 twist barrel work, or should I use a 12 twist for the heavier bullets to be on the safe side? Thanks for any help.

BHYB If you do not have the barrel yet go with the 12 to be on the safe side.

+1 - Given the choice, I'd also go with the 12. BTW, I shoot strictly 68 grn Bart's bullets @100 yds and my barrel is an 8.

I had a walking varminter built a few years ago. I mulled over what twist to spec. I knew I wanted chambered in 6BR and planned on shooting 68-70 grain bullets and went with a 1/12 anyway. I've not tried anything heavier. The rifle shoots in the high 1's and blows ground hogs into hyperspace. I own a 223 and a 22-250 that shoot very well, but not like this.
Go with the 12 and give yourself some wiggle room. Who is building your gun?

I wish I had gone with a 12"... 70's are marginal in my rifle and so I don't shoot them.

one reads an 8 twist will "shoot" 55-105 gr bullets, but i suspect there is an accuracy relationship between twist rate and bullet weight. my 8 tw 6 brx will shoot the 68s but shines with heavy bullets. my new 14 tw 6 br one holes(small) with 68 and 70 gr bullets. a 12 tw will stabilize the 80 grains perfectly. i tried making a 9 tw 22 brx shoot 69 gr bullets(600+) and it refused. tried 73 gr bergers and SHAZAM ...one hole. i suspect matching a bullet weight and "its" favorite powder with "its" twist goes a long way in getting extreme accuracy. just my observations.

If you decide to get a 12 twist, and go with the Dasher, you can shoot up to the 87 vmax bullets.

I just got a 12 twist done.....haven't shot it yet, but from the research I did its a great choice for lighter and light bullets

You could use a 1/14 for the bullets mentioned and probably get better accuracy. The old saw- fewer revs = better accuracy still applies even though bullets are made better these days, especially the custom one offs...............

Since you did not mention the application but only the bullet weight I have to assume this is for 100-200 yard paper punching.............

Twud, who built your walking varminter? I'm gathering information for my next walk-about. It will be a single 6mmBR and I also like the versatility of the 1:12 twist. My average distances will be 100 to 300 yards, so a slower twist with a high 60 to low 70 gr bullet should be just what the Dr. ordered.

I'm still on the fence about a good action/stock marriage. I'm drawn (even though it's a walker) big time to a solid wood stock. I haven't gotten any solid testimonies on solid wood stock makers to this point.

Thanks!!!

Agreed.
I use a 1:14 for the 6BR, which is fantastic for the 60-68gr pills I'm shooting. I’m all about the slowest twist possible that will stabilize the bullet in the weights I want to shoot.

Seems most of the HOF shooters concur which works for me.

Thank you for everybody's input! Greatly appreciated! Twud, to answer your question, I'm not building it yet, I'm still in the "thinking" stage. I will probably have Lester Bruno build it as he is building me a .20 ppc right now.
