6BR tactical match rifle- start to finish

Hi all, I just found this forum and the information here is really impressive. I'm from Australia and tactical matches are just starting to take off here, I shot my first one back in May and learnt a lot about what I would need to be a little competitive in these matches.

My first thought was a 260AI or a 6.5x47 but I came across a barrel already chambered in 6BR and threaded to suit a Howa with only 40 or so rounds through it so it was too good a deal to let go. I swapped the barrel for some milling work so it was pretty much cost free.

I've got a machine shop so I made a chassis for the Howa to fit the AICS skins, I made it as light as possible given I planned to use it in these sort of matches.

I had a 223 Howa that had done a fair bit of work and the barrel was getting a little second hand so it donated its action. I'd never had a barrel off a rifle before but I read a fair bit about it so I made up a barrel wrench that fitted around the front of the action and the recoil lug.

IMG_0980.jpg

The barrel was ultra tight so I stuck it in the lathe and cut a relief just in front of the action to unload the threads, the barrel spun off no problems after that.

IMG_0981.jpg

I cleaned and measured the action and it was lovely, everything was square and straight so it needed no work, the lugs were both bearing evenly so I didn't worry about lapping them. I did need to open up the bolt face to take the BR case. I stripped the bolt down, set it up in the little CNC mill and opened the bolt face to the right diameter and skimmed a couple of tenths of a thou off the face just to ensure it was square.

IMG_0997.jpg

Then I measured up the barrel tenon and chamber position using a go-gauge and depth mic, everything seemed fairly close so I screwed the barrel into the action and gave it a test.

IMG_0986.jpg

Seeing I only had a go-gauge, I made some shims from .0025" paper and used them with the go-gauge.

IMG_1001.jpg

With no shim the bolt closed easily, with .0025" it was firm to close and with .005" there wasn't a hope of closing it. The headspace came out at .002", not too bad for a barrel that was chambered to suit another action, Howa must machine these things pretty well!

IMG_1003.jpg

Once I knew the headspace was right, I modified the original 223 extractor claw to work with the 308 case head size. A little trial and error got it working fine so I cleaned and reassembled the bolt.

I set the barrel up in the lathe on a soft spigot and centre so I didn't damage the crown or chamber and gave it a polish, then engraved the caliber into it. I had a typo on the engraving but once it's cut, it's too late so I've got a 6 milimetre instead of a 6 millimetre. (Aussie spelling) ;)

IMG_1005.jpg

I gave it all a clean then put it back together again.

IMG_1006.jpg

I'd heard a couple of horror stories about getting the 6BR to feed from a magazine and I tried a couple of different setups, finally I settled on the plastic AI mags from my 223, I opened them out to let the BR rounds feed up and shortened the feed lip to let them pop out a little earlier. About an hour with a die grinder and porting roll and a smooth file had them working beautifully, I can fit 7 rounds in the mags, 6 is probably more comfortable, that's fine as 5 would have been enough though I am going to make some single stack 10 round mags for it where the follower only pushes on the case but they're some time in the future.

Here's a video of it feeding (if it shows up)

So far I've put around 200 rounds through it and I haven't had it misfeed or jam up yet, it feels as smooth as the 223 was.

I did end up milling the bolt handle and making a bigger knob for it, it was a little tight extracting with the factory knob and with the wider stock and bigger scope, there wasn't a lot of room to operate it.

I topped the rifle off with a Warne 20 MOA rail, Leupold QWR rings and a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 FFP mil/mil scope. I'm very impressed by the scope, it's very good mechanically and I was using it today to spot for a mate at 500m so the optics are far better than the price would indicate!

I've done a bit of load development over the last week or so and have got it pretty much sorted using the 108gr Berger bt's and 30.2gr of 2208 powder with the bullet seated .010 into the lands. I'm getting 2960 FPS out of the 22.5" barrel and it's shooting .2-.3MOA out to 500m which is as long as the local range is. I've got a couple of matches next weekend out to 800m so it will be interesting to see how it goes!

Anyway, sorry for the extraordinarily long post and congratulations on a really good forum, I can see myself spending some hours poking around here!

Cheers,
Greg

Thanks mate, I just read back through the post and it reads as though it was all done in a day, it did take a few days work to do the rifle and stock over a few weeks. I do engines for a living so it's handy having a workshop full of machines when I want to do something for myself every now and then. The cnc just makes it really easy to make things that work and look good as well.

This rifle has been quite a learning experience, I had never really done any reloading until 2 weeks ago when I suddenly realised I didn't have any choice with this rifle, before that I always shot a 223 or 308 with factory ammo. After seeing how much difference small changes to powder loads, neck tension and seating depths make, I am really hooked on learning a lot more about it. The first trip to the range had a 2" group at 200m and I was a little disappointed, after some load development and nothing else it's getting closer to that at 500m now.

I think with the next rifle I might buy some chamber reamers and have a go at doing that myself as well, I just need to check whether I need to be licensed here to do that. I've got a few ideas for a really light billet aluminium/carbon fibre stock that I'll try out over the next few months, I'm not really into the tube gun style of stock so I'll see what I can work out. I do like the AI stocks for this type of shooting but I think I could drop some weight and make it a little simpler with similar ergonomics.

Great job all around! Would love to see more pics of that chassis!

Thanks mate, I've got a few photos here. I can snap some more this week, I need to pull it apart to fit the sling loops before this weekend.

Here's what I have sitting around..

This was the one I did for my last rifle, it was all from solid bar so it was a fair bit heavier:

I had read this post earlier today and had to read it again, it's just good detail! GregT I hope you kept your programming for your CNC work on the chassis as I would not be surprised if a member asked you to make another and maybe another! The bolt work is great too! It's always nice to read about and the see the work of a enthusiast enjoying their hobby! Again nice work!

Thanks guys, here are a few targets from the last week while I was getting my bullet drops sorted for the different ranges, I have no doubt that the rifle shoots better than I do but obviously isn't a benchrest rifle. Most of these were off a sand bag, the 500m one was off a bipod yesterday.

I need to make a trigger shoe for it, the trigger is a bit short and far back but I'll get that sorted one night this week, it should be a lot nicer to shoot with that done.

Man that thing is cool! I would like to see some more pictures of your magazine mods. I would like to build one of these but in a 22 br and on a 700.

My wife won't let me visit this site any more because she caught me wanking to your pix.

I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or just be plain scared :o ;D

You sure did a wonderful job and the pictures are great Too. To have something done like that here would be so expensive even the rich shooters couldn't afford it. Something you should be very proud of!!! And something any us would love to own.

This is probably a better photo of the magazine modifications. Inside is just sanded with a 3/8" sandpaper roll in a die grinder to let the rounds slide up freely and to sit high enough for the bolt to pick them up. With only that done, they still nosedived occasionally unless I cycled the bolt really quickly.

You can see in the photo where the feed lips are cut back towards the rear of the magazine to allow the round to pop out of the magazine earlier, I just used a flat smooth file to do it and once that was done, every round from both magazines modified the same way has fed properly. If you like, I can take some better photos of it, just let me know what you'd like to see.

Cheers,
Greg

PS Those rounds in the magazines are dummy ones I was using to test it, the actual ones I'm using have quite a bit longer OAL.

A bit of an update, I shot an 800m F-class match this arvo, mainly to get an 800m zero for a practical match tomorrow. I scored a pretty average 44/60 for the first 10 shots as I spent a few shots getting the scope dialed in. The second 10 shots scored 56/60, the missed points were due to my inexperience with reading wind but I'm over the moon with the way the rifle's shooting.

G'day Greg, I love the rifle and the way you have the 6BR feeding is just perfect. By the way, if you're anywhere near Melbourne then I'll let you be my new best friend. ;D

Interesting spelling of "milimetre" - it might just catch on! ;D
Cheers mate
Dave

Hey Fellas, I'm in Queanbeyan, just on the good side of the ACT border. Dave, that's how we spell milimetre in Queanbeyan ;) I think I might have to lose .020" of barrel diameter so I can engrave it again. It pisses me off, I hate bad spelling and I'm left handed so I see it every time I shoot it.

I gave the rifle a bit of a run with some 95gr Noslers and some 105gr Lapua Scenars on Sunday. I set both of them up with about .005" jump to the lands and neither shot as well as the 108 Bergers jammed into the lands. I've got about 700 of the Scenars here so I think I might have to do a bit more development to find a load that works well with them.

I want to use the rifle for some pig/fox shooting and I'd like to get the Noslers or some Barnes TSX loads worked out so it can do the job properly, the Bergers would just work like a hole punch on them from what I've read.

Yes I agree on the spelling issue, it would bother me too.
In my 6BR I found the 90 grain Scenars were very accurate. I haven't tried the 105's. I have pulled off some great shots on Rabbits with the 75Vmax which remains my favourite projectile for the furry things. That's out of an 8 twist Maddco barrel and Stiller action.
Awesome calibre!

Dave
