6br repeating varminter action

So I want to build a 6br repeater as a varmint rifle. Rumor has it the savage centerfeed will work. I am even more worried about extraction than feeding, Will the savage extractor handle it? For that matter are the rumors of 308 centerfeed mags working, true? I know they make the single shots, do they extract reliably? Can I expect reliable ejection from a savage repeater in 6br?????IF NOT: is there a better action with a sako extractor available without spending more than 1k on the action?

only expirence with problems ive ever had with savages was with one chambered in 22-250 AI. it would extract it but the case would hang up in the bolt head lug recess in the action and the case would pull loose from the extractor and dump the round in the action...i know several others have seen this problem before and many have been able to fix the problem or at least lessen the severity of it...other than that i cant be of any help for the 6BR. I understand your concerns...Its so frustrating to get a rifle put together and then find out you have a feeding/extraction issue. good luck on your journey

Thanks for the replies. Is there a custom action I should be looking at? How about the tikka action?

I have a 6BR repeater built off a Savage center feed action I purchased from Jim Briggs at Northland. Feeds and extracts flawlessly after some tweaking. I had the same concerns as you before starting the project and now I couldn't be happier. Since I used a DBM setup, the final detail was getting ahold of one of the magazines Savage makes specifically for the 6BR. It really is an awesome rifle. I took an antelope with it last month and then used it on prairie dogs that same day; a true dual purpose rifle I also use for F class.

Do it. You won't regret it one bit. ;)

Glad to hear it but now I am confused......... does savage make a dm repeating 6br? All I have sean are target 12 singles.

I have a Howa 1500 in 6BR, it used to be .243 and both feeding and extraction works flawlesly.

plus the Howa action is CNC made like the Stiller Actions.

I just put together a 20BR in a 700 action. With some modifying it feeds like butter. No issues with anything.

I have a Tikka T-3 and the action is very smooth and I like the Sako-type extractor. All are "long actions" though, they just a different travel stop on the rearward motion. I have a 6-Dasher coming on a Stiller Predator Repeater action, which uses a M-16 type extractor, which I greatly prefer over the Remington 700 extractor (for smoothness and reliability). I think when comparing the extra money involved in truing a R700 (if you go that route), the Stiller action is very competitive price-wise and has better features.

I built a repeating 6BR on a Rem 700 action and it fed fine from the AI 308 mags. I've since swapped the barrel over to a Weatherby Vanguard action (same as the Howa) and it feeds ok from the factory mag although I've not really put it through a good session to test it thoroughly in this configuration.

Interesting that none of you have experienced problems with ejecting the empty case!

I have just built a 6br on a REM700. It loades and feeds acceptably, but wont eject the case consitanly!

The problem is the short case length. The ejector plunger pusher against one side of the case base forcing the case over against the side of the chamber. So as you withdraw the bolt and the chamber diamter increases the angle is so accute that the base of the case looses contact with the plunger before the case is clear of hte chamber and can flick out, so instead it just drops into the loading area.

I'm hoping it can be fixed by making the plunger a little longer, and maybe going to a sako style extractor.

Whats interesting is my Gunsmith has just built a 300 Whisper on a R700 and found the same issue.

So I'm supprised nobody else has this problem?

Cheers

I've only experienced this when I worked the action quite slow...it seemed like anything that came back at even a decent speed it comes flying right out. Standard ADL action is what I used.

Like I said though...slow and smooth it will kind of either "flop" out or lay back down in the box.

Extraction/ejection was the last problem I had to overcome. I solved this by modifying the ejector to increase protrusion by ~.020". I also increased spring tension on the detent ball under the extractor by stretching the spring. Works great after these two changes. I don't know how well these changes would translate over to something other than a Savage.

Good luck!

I actually left the ejector out of mine after I trued the bolt face. I found it worked fine for what I was using it for which was shooting foxes under light and some casual F Class. Lapua brass is pricey in Aus and digging around in the grass after the empty got ejected out the window of the ute was a PITA.

I re barrel a Sako AII 308 to 6mmBR, works well with no modification to the feeding and extracting mechanism in either repeater or single feed mode. I use it in both casual competition and hunting. I would highly recommend this particular action for 6mmBR.

Don't expect anything to work perfectly all the time. I have two custom actions, Big name popular actions. One needed extractor modification to eject. The other needed to have the ejector protrusion lengthened. Thats with the br case. Quick simple modifications and both have been 100%. I'd say get the action you want and make it work.
