6BR Reamer Question

With a max case length of 1.560 what should I have the chamber length specked at. Is 1.560 too short if I keep my max case length at 1.555. I can't see this case stretching a lot but I don't have any experience with it. Let me know what you think.

Tim:
Not sure if you can "speck" the length of the chamber. I could be wrong. You need to talk to whomever you get to cut your reamer to get the straight info. I can't see why you couldn't get it cut to "your" specs.
The max case length is 1.560 for the 6BR. The two chamber I have measure (actual measurement with the Sinclair chamber plugs) 1.580 and 1.584. That gives you LOTS of room before you need to think about trimming brass and depending on the type of dies that you use, trimming may not be an issue. One Shilen and one Pac Nor barrel and I have no idea who builds their remers for them.
Forster Precision Bushing Bump Dies with brass that has 25 to 30 firings and no trimming needed so far. The brass doesn't have a chance to grow and is still going strong.

TimP: I spec and buy my own reamers from PTG, just took delivery on a 308 Win. Like chamber neck diameter and freebore dimension, I also specify the chamber length. For my 6BR reamers, they are all 1.570, and for the new 308 it's 2.020".

Don't know about anyone else, but PTG will give you any dimension you want.

What I am thinking is if I keep the chamber length at 1.560 and keep a close eye on my case length I will minimize or eliminate the chance of a carbon ring. Most brass comes shorter than the trim to length and typical chamber lengths are cut long and I fully understand why. The brass I am working with will have to be trimmed to 1.550 to get it all uniformed length. What I am trying to figure out is if a chamber length of 1.560 would be to short or will an additional .010 be better. I have never worked with a 6BR case and don't know how much case stretch to expect. This is a match chamber and I am using Lapua brass.

Carbon buildup between the end of the case neck and the end of the chamber could be an issue but I've never had that problem so I never considered it. Something to think about.
If you're shooting Comp, case length may be an issue to condsider but for my application, when my brass gets to "max trim length", I know it's not a problem because of the extra .020 to the end of the chamber area.
We all think a little different. ;)

TimP,
Call Dave Kiff @ Pacific Tool & Gauge and ask him...(541) 826-5808. He's a wealth of help and knowledge. Whenever I order a new barrel for a rifle I don't have a reamer for, I call Dave and give him the particulars of what I'm doing/building. He asks very specific questions and gets me the right reamer for the job. I have always had excellent results in the past. Just my thoughts.

Yes, you can most definitely specify your overall chamber length. The difference between 1.555 and 1.560 is personal preference. Pick the one that you feel more confident with. Another side to this for example...I have a 1.555 chamber length Dasher reamer and its definitely not 1.555...I can run a 1.560 length case in and it just touches.

From what I've seen for myself and heard from others, the chamber lengths are running about + or - .020 longer than the the "max" trim length.
With most being that way, when your brass starts to measue "max", no need to panic as you've still got a ways to go before you start running into problems. And if you choose the proper resizing die, trimming may not be needed. ;)

Guys, all reamer manufacturers have tolerances to work from on their prints. Take PTG for example, I use Dave's reamers exclusively, makes things easy for me and I like the service i receive from Dave.

His tolerances on reamers unless otherwise specified are:

Fractional +or - .001
Decimal + 0.0004
Angular + or - 1/4
Lengths + .005

I'm sure if you want a reamer held to the tenth and + or - nothing, he will do it, but it would probably be a little more money.

I wouldn't sweat it as long as the smith chambers and threads properly
