6BR OR 243

hi guys ive shot a 6ppc for the last 15 years and i want a larger caliber for long range target shooting and the odd deer, ime stuck between these two calibers,so can the 6BR reach out as far as a 243,as i want the 6BR for its accuracy but worry as it won't be much more than my 6ppc,any advice would be help full cheers simon...

not an expert but i thank you would like a 6brx little more power in case and it does reach out to 400 with stoping power. my son go one at a little over 400 yds. made a turn around and droped hit in sholder did good job. just my 2 cents

Lots of nice-shooting 6mm cartridge options between 6BR & 243WIN.

Almost all with a .475" base dia. (.308-size) are easier on barrels than a 243WIN, the exception that comes to mind being a 6x284.

6BRX, 6Dasher (all made from 6BR), 6XC, 6Creedmoor (6.5 Creedmoor necked down), heck even the 6HAGAR (.421" base dia.) at the bottom end (case capacity equal to 6BR), a couple of AI'S in there someplace.

I've seen good shooters use a 6BR out to 1,000 yards produce good scores but not when the winds blow too hard. Extra 200+ fps reduces windage errors pretty quick so pick your bullet & twist & find a reamer as long as it takes.

The one thing you need is an 8 twist for the heavy bullets. The Dasher will shoot a 105 to 108 grain bullet 3050 or so. The BR will shoot it around 2900 or so. They both do it with a lot less powder then a 243. Matt

Formal target? how far on the odd deer? I use a 6br for target shooting and some formal match. Mainly as a G-hog and fox rifle and for culling deer. It works great and is as easy as it gets. If I step up for ease I think I would go to a 6x47L. Any of the mentioned are great just depends on what FPS range you want to achieve.

I have every one of the 6mm's mentioned above, except the 6 Dasher.

I will try thin one as everyone I have seen is a tac driver. Very easy to fireform brass for.

6br, 6brx, & the 6 Dasher . . . I don't think you could go wrong with any of them.

I also have a 243 and love it, just a little more expensive to shoot it, plus the barrel goes pretty quick as well.

I built my youngest daughter a 6 BR with an 8 twist for deer hunting using a Benchmark barrel. I also built myself a 243 using an 8 twist. Both are finished at 22" long and both shoot the Berger 95gr VLD.

The BR actually chrono's 11 fps faster than the 243!

You can get 3000fps out of the BR with a 28 1/2" barrel shooting the Sierra 107 BTHP and using Reloader 15 powder.

I would diffently go with the 6 BR. Accurate, easy on brass, easy on powder and easy on the sholder.

This is because 22" is way too short for powders used with 243win. Add 6" of barrel and results flip around.

For mid range accuracy with deer killing energy, I'm surprised there hasn't been many suggestions for the 6.5x47L.
I would think it would be a more logical step for someone used to 6PPC, as the 6.5x47L is also an underbore cartridge that follows similar load dynamics. An overbore cartridge(slower powders, lower viable pressure peaks) is nothing like a 6PPC.

I wouldn't exactly call a 6BR overbore. The 243 takes 40 grains or so of powder with a 105 and the 6BR takes around 29 grains of Varget to get about the same velocity. Matt

I didn't call a 6br overbore.
But it is not underbore, like a 6PPC, 30br, or 6.5x47L.
An underbore allows use of faster than normal powders for cal, because of relatively large bullet diameter to smaller case capacity.
With these faster powders you can run higher peak pressures, which is a work-around for many things, and use a shorter/stiffer barrel without excessive muzzle pressures.

I believe the 6.5x47L represents the capacity limit to the underbore advantage. You won't see it extended further without going to larger than normal action/tennons(to get enough barrel steel around the chamber). In other words, we won't have a viable extreme pressure cartridge for distant shooting (a 6PPC for 1kyd) without a plan that departs from common.

Here is a 5 shot g oup fired with Nosler 105 gr bthp comp bullets at 200 yards this past weekend. Rifle is a Savage I put together myself with a HS precision stock and AI mag system. Built on a Savage model 10. It has a McGowan prefit
26 inch varmint barrell in 1 in 8 twist. It shoots the Berger hunting 105s just as well.
