6BR on the job

well guys my 6BR is getting tired, have @over 1,300 rounds on it. so i been working with it and trying to find a seating depth adujustment, powder tune to get it back to shooting.
I plan on shooting it in a group match next month. I know im going to have to load at the range and im a powder weigh -n- guy, down to the kernel. but i been playing with my harrels powder measure to find a reliable repetable operation, so i been adjust-n- and weigh-n- on a dig scale trying to find that.because its what im going to have to use at the match. so i loaded up 16 rounds at 54.5clicks.(i like saying that).and head to the range at 5:30PM. it just qiut raining and the sun was out,by the time i got to the range,4miles out the road, sun was gone, overcast and cool.very light drizzle. I got some UBR targets so i thought i will try shooting some of them and see if i can hit that 11 and at the same time check the tune on my rifle & shoot a group or two. so i shoot a sighter fouler round,(missed that 11). then i go to the target, shoot one,(ah missed that 11) so shot another(same hole)so might as well just shoot a group.so after 4 shots still had one hole and it looked so small in the scope,i decided to walk to the target and check it out.yep 4 shots in one hole and looked in the -0-so could not bring myself to shoot the 5th one.looks like a .078.
so i decide to shoot another 5 shot group and no matter how it looks im going to shoot 5.
so i did. then shot my last 5 and headed home.
Im thinking i still might have something for them boys.
so im going to give a match a go next month, and that powder throwing looks like it going
to work out.maybe.

FJIM...If you don't mind,I'd like to know more about the details of your rifle and load. That is EXCELLENT shooting! The groups say ALOT about the shooter as well as your equipment. Yes....you'll be highly competitive at your next match....good luck.....gpoldblue

FJIM - good shooting and good luck.

Now - you are the one guy that I have seen posting targets on this forum that consistently meet the "lights out" statement...no BS its there in black and white. I don't shoot slow twists and little bullets but I would be real keen to know your case prep - loading techniques, rest setup etc (PM me if you want). No worries if ya can't be bothered getting into it...as I said good luck and good shooting.

everyone wants to see the equipment, its just regular stuff. im trying to post a pic.
now dont make fun of my barrel.
I cant figure out how to post a good pic. seems when i size them down they wont come out,i have seen some nice pic's posted.but i just cant seem to do it. but i will keep trying.

I love shooting little 5-shot groups at 100 because I am not particularly good at it. A good 6BR sure helps. But, what I really like is putting 20 down range in the wind and keeping them in the money.

Viper SS Drop Port $1300
30" Bartlein 5R HV 8" twist $ 330
Sierra 107 Moly $.30

Satisfaction of putting them where you want them - priceless ;)

sorry guy's i cant seem to get a good pic posted, thats something i have have to look into.
But here it is. its a old hart action, rem bolt
pacnor barrel. its my own contour,i talked with pacnor on this barrel, spec's and things about barrels. so what we decidied on. what should be the most accurate barrel.
naturally its a stainless super match, 3 grove 14 twist, 24".
now what we believed in was, 1.230 dia, straight tapered to .850 at 24"
fluted for weight. now the flutes help in cooling and the taper, lighter tward the front and more riged, less vibration. its worked as i or as we talked or believed it would.
people have questioned me on why the pacnor. i say why not..so is it a fluke barrel or not
we are going to find out,I have one to the same spec's on order.so we will see if it shoots as this one has,But there is no doubt its been the most accurate(consistantly) accurate rifle i have ever owned. I also have another barrel to my spec's on order.so we will see how that goes.
its a mcmillian regular Benchrest stock.balck/white molded in.
its piller bedded. not a glue in.
scopes, its had a few different ones on it over the last 7years.
now it has a 9-36 IOR on it.lol and yes we can dial it way out there.
i shoot off a hart rest with a BR top.
have several different front and rear bags and want to try some more.
i shoot with a light hold,to a hard hold. but play with free recoil. just depends on the bench and if i can get a good set up i will try free recoil. but most of the time a light hold.
the rifle weighs right at 13.5lbs with the BIG IOR on it.at least i think i can make HV weight with it. now i have weighed it with another scope on it at 11 lbs.
I just hope i can keep it shooting,in tune and dont fall apart at the match.
like i get there and just shoot poorly(can happen) or just missread wind. or just get out of tune and shoot some big groups.but i do have the confidence in the rifle to concentrate on me.
as i have said have over 1,300 rounds through it and the accuracry has fallen off or after shooting today, its gotten finicky to keep it shooting.so im building a new one.hope it will be done this time next year.
I made a chamber cast of this chamber and sent it off to have a reamer made from it.
I have shot the same 15 match'ed cases for 6 years and never FL sized one ever.only ever neck sized with a redding comp/bush die.but they were getting tired so i had to make up some new ones, that was the ones i shot today.

Ah some better pictures.

sleepygator that is good shooting from them big slow moving bullets.
one day im going to try a long range barrel on mine and see if like it.
I dont want to upset anyone and i havent done it for a few years but i have shot
5 shot groups in the .350's to .550's at three hunderd yards with little 65 gr bullets.
and it seems you guys measure them different than i do, i dont know how to measure a 300yrd group. i measured them just like they were a 100 yard group??
so my out side to out side group measure's .593 outside to out side.
maybe one day if i get some time i will shoot some and post them.

FJIM, that would be some good shootin indeed. What are you shooting to get that?

No, we measure them the same way. I just use OnTarget software and scan the target. If that offers any advantage, it tends to reduce error from holes smaller than bullet diameter. Otherwise, outer edges - bullet diameter.

Those Sierra 107s are not moving all that slow. My match load is ~2930 from a 30" barrel. Granted, that is not the 3600 you probably get with 65s. I have witnessed BR guys shoot very small 300 yard groups, when the wind is very calm. In San Diego, we just don't see much of that.

same thing im shooting there at 100yrds. 6BR

FJIM, I'm starting out with a new to me 6BR custom, lilja 24 x 1:14 3 groove barrel, hs stock with an old 8-32 burris peeplex so am looking for some good starting points. Without giving away any "trade secrets", could you volunteer bullet brand/weight and powder? Thanks, Dale

Try as I might -reading it over and again I keep missing what range at which the the groups were shot....................

well guys back from my match and did so poorly i did not want to post anything on it but that would be unfair.(so its been a few weeks since and im feeling better and not so sure i dont have a mechanical issue.)
but here goes, shot a .358 agg at 200yrds(fair but not great, tricky conditions)
shot a .360 agg at 100yrds and that has been the worst shooting i have ever done with this rifle.
we had some tricky wind and i was just not shooting well. so i did poorly.
im going to shoot another match the end of this month.im doing some work on the rifle( new scope) is on its way.
Im really not sure if my scope may have been giving me a problem or maybe my barrel is just giveing up at say @1600 rounds.
so as soon as the new scope gets here and new mounts i will be back at the range with my new set of wind flags
to see if i can get it shooting well enough to have something for this up comming match.if not my new rifle should be done,i hope by march of 2012 and im looking forward to it shooting as well as this one has.
One thing for sure is , im sure about the load. after the just flat out poor shooting at the match i was back at the range with several different powders trying to shoot a good group and thats when i noticted some freeky scope issue(a shift in the poi and recoil jaring it out of focus) but still shot some fair groups with N133,RL15,N135 and went back to standby load and they were all down the same hole. so im certain this is the load but after shooting in this match it maybe harder than i thought to prove it in competition.
