6br loading

I am fixing to start reloading for my new 6 br that I finally got all the parts for and was curious on where to start. I have lapua brass wolf srm primers varget and reloaded 15 and some 107 matchkings. How many grains and roughly how far from the lands? I have the measuring tools but don't know where to start. And what kind of speed should I be looking for

If you have not already done so, check out the 6BR load data info on this sites homepage. A lot of excellent information contained there.

+1 on 6br load data.

I was just shooting today because I love to freeze my butt off! Good news my 100 zero was about perfect and 300 was punching holes about 1/2 moa right. A very decent left to right wind. I really need to work on my wind doping.

Anyway, I'm really just starting out, I don't have a chrony, and my reloading is kinda primitive to what a lot of guys here do on a regular basis so that's why I shoot a 6br ;D. I shoot SMK's .010" off the lands with 28.9 grains of Varget and CCI 450 primers. That's a WAY low load for what's on the load data page, but it seems to work great for me. It shot .2moa at 100 today and .4moa at 300. Doesn't seem to like shooting 200 or maybe it's just me. It's a varmint gun.

With 105 amaxs IIRC the oal(to bullet tip) was 2.330. SMK's will be quite a bit longer. Good idea to get a sinclair comparator. It looks like a nut and costs about $20. Don't measure to the tip like I was doing - it'll drive you crazy.

Like I said no chrony and working a spreadsheet backwards I should be shooting about 2820fps.

Take care,
Jeff

Try 30 grains of VARGET with a 107 SMK seated for a .020" jump with the Wolf magnum primers.

This load will bring a smile to your face.

Tyler: What other people recommend is what is working in their rifles, their favorite loads. And I understand it may be a good "starting place" for your rifle, but you will still have to adjust bullet seating depth, powder, charge, bullet, etc. to determine what's best for your rifle.

29.8grns of varget with 107 SMK's make iddy biddy tiny holes for me. But I am using the federal primers. Just start at 28.0 grns of varget and work up to 30.0 grns, you'll hit your load without much effort. As always watch for pressure signs...

PS - Just about ever target rifle I have owned operate there best 10 thou off the lands...

John pierce said the chamber was cut for the 107s do you all think it could be possible to shoot some 87 grain v maxs or something in that range for a varmit bullet?

It's a 8 twist broughton chambered for 107s the smith said. I was curious if any body thinks the 87s will shoot

I loaded some rounds for my 6br the other day and things seemed kinda weird. I measured the length with the hornady oal gauge and the reading was 1.845 using a comparator so I shortened it to 1.823 and the round would not chamber so I shortened it some more till it would finished round was 1.805 off the ogive all measured with hornady stuff this is my first time reloading what am I doin wrong? I figured measure the length of the base to the lands and subtract 15 and it would work. So any insight would be great thanks

For what it's worth, I have a 1:8 twist Kreiger throated for the 107 SMK that shot the Berger 95gr VLD very nicely all the way to 1000 yards. They were jammed and ended up seated out in the neck, but that did not cause any problems. According to the Litz book, the shank on the V-Max is actually longer than the shank on the 95 VLD (0.333 vs 0.285 inches), so, given that you will probably jump the V-Max in addition to the longer shank, I think the V-Max should work fine in your rifle.
