6BR load at 100 yards

As I understand it the 6mmBR is not 'the best' rifle for 100 yards but it should be great nonetheless, and I will still be doing a lot of my early shooting at 100 to get familiar. Thus, what bullet and loads do you recommend?,I now reload for .223.)

I have on order in ascending weights -- 100 each of Berger 68 Match FB, Hornady 75 V-Max, Berger 80 Match FB, Sierra 85 Spires, Berger 90 HPBT, Berger 95 VLD and Berger 105 VLD -- but its not too late to change some of the order. I also have some commercial ammo,Lapua Scenar 90s) so as to have some early brass to reload.

Shooting out of a Savage Model 12, 28-in McGowen 1:8 SS bull barrel,.271 throat/.237 bore).

About 60 lbs. of powder on hand, plenty of Varget, H322, TAC, Win748, H335, AA2460, AA2230, and VV 133, 135, 530 and 540.

About 11,000 primers in a mix of CCI-BR4s, CCI 450s and CCI 400s; Remington 71/2 and Federal 205M.

I think I can find some good loads with these mixes. Any recommendations?

I shoot squirrels with mine and use 75 gr VMAX with 32.5 gr. Varget.
It shoots really good out to 400 or so yards.
100 yards every shot in a dime.
The VMAX shoot so well I haven't really tried much else.

Ben, I dont think that's true in all cases, my 6 BR shoots vary well at 100.

And I dont understand how some claim to shoot in the .4 MOA at 100 then at .2 or .3 MOA at 200+. That's sort of defying the laws of physics.

I see you have all the fixing to shoot my favorite load, that shoots in the .2 or better for me at 100.

Take that Berger FB 80g, over 30.5g of Varget, with either CCI BR-4 or 450 primers, and seat them at or just into the lands. And give that a try, it sure works for me in a 1/8' twist 26' Pac-Nor, and I'm using the same action as you are. I do trickle all loads, and check at 1/8' below the bullets meplat,tip) for concentricity,Runout) and adjust them to all be at less than .004 total runout, but this may or may not make much difference as most are not out much over that anyway.

You may have to play with the charge and or the bullet seating depth, to get the best performance from your rifle, but it should work.

My 6BR shoots well at all ranges with the vertical MOA opening up as I get to longer ranges but others have observed the bullet settling down as you describe. The explaination for this wobbling is said to be 'yaw' which I think means that the axis of the bullet is not lined up with the axis of the bore when it exits the muzzle. There apparently is some gyroscopic principle that causes the resulting wobble to decrease as the bullet goes down range. I think that the Sierra Loading Manual discussed this in detail. Because I make sure that my loaded round runout is under 0.001 inches and I jam my bullets, I may be minimizing this yawing motion.
Give VV540 a try with the CCI450s. I have had the best velocity and accuracy with that combination.

Sierra 75gr Varminters,FB HP) are hard to beat, I've had better luck with these than I have the Bergers.

Varget and N540 for the 90gr bullets and up. N135 for 85gr and lighter, will be a good starting point. Primers, I use 205M and BR4.

I have shoot many 0.1's and a few 0.0's at 100 with all my BR's

Im sorry, but your going to have to explain wobbling and yaws effect on a curved trajectory that's auto correcting, and I do know what the words mean.
If a bullet that's spun stabilized by rotating at over 100,000 RPM has much wobble or yaw at 100 yds it would be key holding slightly.
But lets assume your bullets do wobble and yaw at 100, the center of its mass must still be on its straight path,,barring wind and gravity) for it to ever straighten out and still be on target at 300. They dont go astray by .5 moa at 100, then somehow find there way back on track,original line of sight) for a .3moa at 300 yds and beyond.
This is a basic law of physics. So please explain the forces that cause this phenomena.

About Yaw, I looked in my books, and Spear was the only one to even put a paragraph in about bullet yaw.

Per Spear's Book. 'Yaw is the rotation of the back of a bullet around its axis, the bullets nose normally will remain on its axis and trajectory. This will normally correct its self do to its stabilizing rotation in the first 40 to 100 yards'.

Nothing was said about it effecting accuracy.

Bryan explains the physics but doesn't believe that these laws of physics explain why bullets may seem to go to sleep because his calculations suggest that the effect is too small to explain what people observe.

The Sierra Rifle & Handgun Reloading Data Edititon V 3rd Printing Pages 1062-1069 discuss 'Yaw of Repose and Crossrange Deflection' which I believe is a discussion of the same physical force on the bullet.

Rifle Accuracy Facts by Harold Vaughn Page 192 discusses the same physical forces with respect to gyroscopic stability and twist rates.

My 6BR shoots very well at 100 yards. It easily shoots groups in the .1's at 100 yards and if I do my part with reloading and proper shooting techniques, it will shoot in the .0's. I use it to shoot squirrels out to 1000 yards. I already have some 800+yard kills with it using the 105grn A-Max. I love this cartridge!

I've had good results from H322 and N135 when shooting the lighter bullets in slow twist barrels. Should be good in the faster ones as well, I would think. Varget gets the nod usually, for the heavier bullets.---Mike Ezell
