6br in odd configuration

went to the gun show today looking to trade a couple nice guns i dont shoot much anymore for a target rifle and came across a 6br built on an older ruger m77 action. Very nice gun with 24" ss barrel 1:14 twist, older sweet canjar trigger, custom stock and scope. now ive noticed on here almost noone uses ruger actions for custom builds. Any reasons? just dont shoot well? hard to get parts for? Ill be up shooting it tomorrow and see how it does.....any thoughts from you guys would be welcome.

The Mauser type actions have a reputation for not shooting as well as some of the other actions such as the 700, 40x, Salvage, and others. Some of the reputation is keyboard related and some of it is earned. What percentages keyboard realted and earned I dunno. I do know that at a match today a bone stock Ruger VT outshot some pretty fancy custom bench rifles at 100yds ..... I seen the targets and scores a few minutes ago. ;D

I like the Rugers just fine myself, but have seen a few that flat would not shoot. A few years back a shooting partner of mine had one that would NOT shoot, he took it to a local gunsmith and had a custom barrel put on it (a 6br as I recall) (it didn't make sense to me at the time either), but when he got it back home that thing would shoot with any good bench rifle. :o

Let us know how it turns out. WD

Betting you'll be in love with that rig after shooting it. The M77 action is a "Mauser-type" with claw extractor and seldom used in benchrest shooting. Some don't like the Ruger because they are machined from castings, a process pioneered by Ruger. Some of the best custom actions, though, were also made from castings so not sure that's a valid argument. I have had several of the Varmint models in laminated stock with two-stage triggers and they would shoot with any factory or semi-custom (Cooper, 40X). Several guys who have them in the PPC calibers have done great at our egg shoots. I'm betting with a custom barrel in 6 BR that thing will be a keeper. Let us know ...

thanks guys ,you have given me some hope , i was starting to think i made a mistake although the 1:14 twist still kind of bothers me knowing ill have to keep bullets under 70 gr so it wont be real good at longer distances

Well , went and shot it this morning and i am pretty darn pleased. With too small a scope,3x12 and reloaded ammo that came with rifle that 1 in 3 or 4 would missfire and some of the ones that did fire were delayed and sounded like a muzzle loader i came up with this target.....these are 3 shot groups at 100 yds

Nice-looking rifle, bam ... put a good scope on it and get some safe ammo and you will be smilin' for sure.

nice rifle bam, that is a old ruger with the tang safety, i had one in a 6mm rem, one rifle i wish i would of not sold.
nice shooting, like skeetlee said dont shoot no more of them shell's.
if the brass looks good, you could pull the bullets and dump the powder, punch out the primers. but maybe best to start with some new stuff.
Good Shooting.

Bam1015,
Tha is definitely a nice looking rig. Personally, I have three M77's in various calibers. One has the tang safety while the other two are newer. I believe the older Rugers are better made and have better actions than the newer ones. Just feel the action on an 80's vintage Ruger and one you'd buy today. The difference is like night and day and I have no idea what happened to the quality control on their actions. But I am also in the process of having my Target Model Ruger 22-250 converted over to a 6.5X55. I bought a Hart barrel for it which is sitting at my Gunsmith's waiting for him to get past the "hunting season" rush for guys having their rifles worked on. That one of the problems with a good Gunsmith - high demand for repairs. I'm just hoping mine shoots as well as your's when I get it back. And BTW, to answer your question about why guys don't use Ruger actions, from what I've heard in vatious shooting quarters, folks just don't care for the feel of the Ruger action and I sure as hell can atest if they are using anthing made after 2000. I'd never buy another Ruger these days unless it was an 80's model. I'm just using the Ruger action because the 22-250 just doesn't shoot worth beans when you compare it to my 6mm Savage BR. Lastly, old adage...there are only two kinds of Rugers...good ones and bad one. Given what nice rifles other companies build these days, Ruger has put themselves in a hole.
