Border Ghost
Have two 6PPC , want to build a 6BR , both my brothers have 6BR`s and we shoot 300 to 500Yds , Can a 26" , 13.5 twist with 68grn boat tails compete out to 500Yds , or do i need a 1-8 twist with Bibs 104 grn bullets finished at 26" to beat them , Ordering a new Blank , My reamer is a JGS with a .045 FB , I do have a throating reamer also.
Thanks for any advise.

Im not a benchrester, just my experience...

300 and under flat base bullets are more accurate. After 300 boat tails.

Flat base bullets stablize in flight quicker than a boat tail.

This isnt saying a flat base 68gr wont make it to 500 at all, but a 6BR 7.5 or 8 twist with 105 bergers will be better at 500 than a 13 twist with light bullets.

Yep agree , think new blank will be an 8 twist finished at 26 inches.

Try some 80 Bergers in that 13.5 twist barrels with some 8208. I and others that I know, had that twist and it shot the 80 FB very small. You will have to go to the upper limits to get the small groups. May do well at 500. LT-32 at max will also work.

We play Annie Oakley style games @ 440 yds on 4 inch steel. I shoot the straight 6BR with the 70 sierra BTHP Match In a 14 twist Krieger. It does better in the wind than one might think. I still prefer 60 gr. Flat base bullets and XBR 8208 under 300yds.

Too much made of the cartridge and bullets. Over the last 15 to 20 years I have won quite a few 400 and 500 yd Groundhogs matches against "superior" cartridges and bullets with a 6ppc and 63 to 68 flatbase bullets. I do think flatbase bullets are often easier to tune. How many of you even know the theory of the boat tail and were this unproven idea came from. Few I am sure. If your looking for magic by jumping to a particular bullet cartridge, good luck. A better idea is learn to tune your rifle, learn to read conditions with or without flags, but always shoot over flags when doing load development. Good bench manners is seldom discussed but very important. I think the goal of many shooters from what I read and hear is to get the latest greatest equipment then find some shortcuts. If your not willing to do the work you will not have consistent sucess.

Your 6ppc can definitely get it done for you. It may not be the "optimum" chambering for the task........But beware of the shooter with one gun.........Like that guy above^^^^^^^..... ;)

Rick

I would do a 28 inch barrel. That extra velocity gained should help at 500. I would definitely opt for an 8 twist and shoot the heavier bullets. If you look at the equipment lists for 600 yard BR, you will see almost everybody is using the 103 to 105 class bullets. This combo is also great if you decide you want to shoot at longer ranges, especially for 1000 yard. You will definitely have to throat it for the longer bullets. I use a .155 in a Dasher. Matt

FWIW, the best 300-500yd shooter in benchrest that I ever competed against and personally witnessed his scores and groups shoots a 10tw 6br and either 80 or 90gr bullets. He doesn't win every match, but when he shows up he's almost always in the top 3 if he doesn't win. His 100 & 200 scores are competitive too. JME. WD

I have a 12 twist 6 BR that shoot the 88 Berger in.

with h4895 I’m getting 3080fps and they shoot very well at 600 yards.

I’d say if I was going to shoot 600 yards ALL the time I would run an 8 twist and a 105 class bullet.

However for 100-600 yards shooting the 88 really shines. A 105 will outperform it in the wind obviously but the accuracy is very good.
