6BR Cooper twist

Hi - new to the forum and first post.

I would like to get a 6BR principally for some paper punching and occasional varmint shooting. I really like Cooper rifles; however, their 6BR has only a 1 in 14 twist rate. Seems to me that this is really slow and would limit my choice of bullet weights. I would also like to also use bullets over 100 grains.

I think I need a faster twist at least 1 x 10. What are your thoughts about the 1 in 14 twist rate and do you have suggestions.

Thanks -

William

Im no BR guy but I can tell you to stabilize a 100 gr. bullet or heavier I would use an eight twist or better. Welcome to the site these guys are awesome, they really know their stuff and are always more than willing to help.

I have the 2008 Cooper catalog in my hand, and it does not list a 6BR chambered in any of their firearms. Yes, you need an 8 twist for 100 gr. bullets. Call Cooper - they will supply a rifle in any caliber/twist combination you prefer. But, you might not like the additional price. I think its about $300 extra. I really like the Montana Varminter and hope to soon have one in the 6BR Norma with 8 twist.

If you go to their on-line catalog they list the Montana 6BR with a 1:14 twist.

Only reason I haven't bought it. Also considering having a smith put one together.

I have had a Cooper 6BR for about two years now and I love it. I usually shoot 65 gr Vmax. That has been all I need for paper punching and shooting coyotes and Prairie Dogs. I'm not sure why I would need to shoot 100 gr bullets.

Usually to 300 yds. I haven't been to a place where I have really had a chance to shoot at longer distances.

I think the accuracy is very good. Typical is under .5 MOA.

Here are some of my early targets. These targets are 2" X 2",each box is 1" X 1").

The Cooper 6BR with a 14 twist will be perfect for your intended uses. It will shoot 65-68 gr. bullets unbelievably. There might be some advantage to a faster twist for heavy bullets @ 600-1000 yds but for your uses the 14 twist is the way to go. Coopers are manufactured with hunting as their primary goal, that's why they use the 14 twist.
Here is a picture of a 5 shot 100 yd. group shot with my Cooper MTV M22 6BR. It looks like 3 shots but it's 5.
65 gr. Hornady Vmax shoot as well as any bullet I've tried.

Pictures are worth a 1000 words. Thanks for the pictures. Seems like they are extremely accurate.

By the way no one in these parts seem to have a Cooper 6BR available. I also surfed the Web. Do you happen to know of any dealers who might have a Cooper available in 6BR.

Thanks -

Wm

Normally Cooper supplies 14 to one twist in 6br, but you can get 10:1 at no addtional cost because they use it on their .243.
Likw said above though the 14:1 is good for under 300 yards, and under 70 grain bullets. They use a 70g V max for their test/ target.

In another post in this forum regarding Coopers, I said I found a new M22 Varminter in 6mmBR with 1:8" twist. The store from which I purchased it had just one, and told me the special twist was a $385 option. I have since heard that Cooper has recently begun to market that twist without the added charge. Call Cooper and ask. I have just broken mine in with 20 shots so far, found creep in the trigger. The owner's manual says they will instruct a gunsmith in trigger adjustment. Will see.
I am hopeful this rifle will shoot well with 105 - 108 gr. bullets with high BC. In my view, that would be the perfect varmint combination.

Did Cooper confirm that they are now manufacturing with 1:8 twist barrels as a standard choice, not option)? Let us know how it shoots. I have a couple of Cooper's and the triggers are fantastic. Really surprised to hear that you have some creep.

If you can, I would get a faster twist barrel too. The 1-8 twist will allow you to shoot bullets from 65 on up to 107grn. The slow twist barrel will really limit your bullet choice and range. If your only going to be shooting out to 300 yards, the slower twist barrel will work fine. However, once you start shooting beyond that point, it starts getting really hard to hit that small varmint at extended ranges.

I use to be a light bullet high velocity guy. However, once I started watching my buddies connect on long range varmints consistently, I knew I needed to change my way of thinking if I wanted to make long range hits on a consistent basis. I am not saying you can't make long range shots with lighter bullets, you can, it's just a little more difficult to make.

I am saying a faster twist barrel and using higher BC bullets increases your chances at longer ranges. And when I mean longer ranges, I am talking about 500 to 1000 yard shots. At these ranges, you need all the help you can get.

Once again, I would highly recommend going with the 1-8 twist. Remember, you can still shoot the lighter bullets if you choose to. Let us know how it works out for you. Your going to love the 6BR.
