6BR build

I am wanting to have a 6br built around an 87gr vmax bullet for shooting pdogs. This will be my first custom bolt gun. Any suggestions on a good smith for the project?

How far do you want to go on the project and what is yoiur budget? Do you have an action, barrel, stock? Give me an email if interested:

Please excuse my ignorance but I am unfamiliar with the process. I want to go far enough to have a rig that will potentially shoot .20-.35 moa or better. I have not set a budget but I do not want to spend 5k on the build. On the other hand, I do not want to sacrifice the quality of the build and use the cheapest stuff. . Will $2500-3000k cover the cost of such a rifle? Being unfamiliar with the process I have not purchased anything for the build as of yet, but I have the funds and can start ordering parts ASAP.

My email address is dleinard@markwest.com.

Where are you located...........Generally..

It might help members find someone local to you to use......

You might also consider a used gun. Shooter's Corner and others have them for as much as 50% less than original cost to build.

Like mentioned , try used first. There is some really good guns out there. On the other hand, get you a 700 action, have a barrel put on it, and go to shooting. Im thinking go with a fast twist (8?), in case you want to shoot the 105 s. Its easy to get that kind of accuracy from a br. They really like to shoot ! Good luck, keep us informed !

The kind of accuracy you are seeking is very easy to achieve. There is a good smith close to you but I'm not sure where. PM butchLambert for a recommendation on a gunsmith close to you as he is in Poetry, TX.

Used is a good way to go, but so is a re barreled Remington 700. Whatever you do, don't fall for the Savage route.

Should I go ahead and start ordering the long lead time items like the action, barrel and stock or should I wait until I have located a smith and let him assist in the component selection process?

Kelbly actions are a very good way to go and the lead time is very reasonable. The beauty of Kelbly actions is that your (competent) gunsmith does not need the action for chambering the barrel, so you will never be without a rifle.

You can call Kelbly's and ask to talk to Jim and he will fill you in on the details.

As far as barrrels go, I would recommend Brux, Krieger, or Bartlein in that order.

Keep in mind that the 6mmBR is not repeater friendly...if you want a single shot rifle it will work fine..but making it feed out of a magazine is nearly impossible...in my opinion a 10 twist would be idea for the 87 grain bullets..

There are many repeater 6BR's out there that feed well. The biggest issue is ejection, but a Sako extractor takes care of that issue.

What repeater will work with the 6mmBR...??...please send some video of such...keep in mind that a single stack magazine in an AR platform does not apply... yeah, I have heard that the Mike Bryant modification works, but have not seen one in person,..have tried his modifications with not much success..and I purchased the custom made Wyatt magazine box and tried it in my Rem. Model 7,...did not work properly...I tried for many years to buy or modify Remingtons to feed the 6mmBR out of a magazine box and it is a 50-50 proposition at best...

Why not get a savage? And why brux first, just curious?

Because Savage trigger systems are junk.

Brux first because they have a shorter lead time the the others. I have also had the best customer service from Brux over the years. And I'm a little partial to Brux if you read below my name. ;)

Eww1350, I used to have a 6BR repeater built on a Remington 700 action with no modifications that would feed well, but it would not eject due to lack of Sako extractor. Look up posts from Alf as he has posted many rifles chambered in 6mm Dasher that he claims feed very well in repeaters.

I really like the looks of the McMillian A5 stock with the adjustable cheek piece. Would this stock provide a good quality and stable platform for my build?
