6BR at 300 yards, Best Twist?

Most of my shooting is 300 yards and under. Am I correct that the 1/12 barrel is the best choice for 300 yards? I would like to find the most potentially accurate 300 yard setup. Thanks Jeff

Depends. My readings say it depends on what grain bullets you plan on shooting.

Perhaps other shooters here can offer their opinions because they have much more experience than I do.

I good friend of mine does very well at 300 yard club matches. He likes the 10 twist and an 80 grain Berger bullet and Benchmark or H322. I have chosen the 12 twist so I don't have to sacrifice velocity using 68 grain flat based when I shoot under 200 yards. (a compromise). I can shoot an 80 grain, but not an 88 grain that I could with a 10 twist. Soooooo
If you want to emphasize 300 yards perhaps 10 twist. If you shoot a lot of 100 and 200 yard stuff with an infrequent 300 yard, then you may choose a 12 twist.
If you shoot lots of 100 and 200 yard stuff, then you may even want a 14 twist, and hope there is no wind when the 300 yard match happens, as you will be limited to 70 grain.

For pure accuracy work the 6BR case is a little too big for light bullets, which is why the 6PPC with 65-68gr bullets is a better choice for 100-200yd. For longer ranges you can take advantage of the extra case capacity of the 6BR by shooting heavier bullets. At 300yd with a BIB 95FB you will have about a 33% wind deflection advantage over the 6PPC -- that's a big plus. You'll need a 1-10tw for the BIBs (or the 88-90gr Bergers).

jeffm,

I built my first 6BR with a 12 tw, to shoot 80gr bullets, for groundhod and eggs matches. it is a great combo out to 600 yds. You will not loss any speed with the lighter bullets. The 14 tw with 68 gr bullets, would work fine for 300 yds, but some will not shoot the 80 gr bullets. A !2 tw does most of my shooting, but I have a 10 & 8 tw 6BR's. Like Toby said the 10tw will shoot the 95 Bib's and the 90 BT Berger, very well out past 600 yds.

I would not feel at a disavantage shooting with a PPC 100 & 200yds. My guns are set up for 600 and 1000 yds shooting, so I can't shoot short range matches. Beyond 200 yd the 6BR start to walk over most rounds, well maybe not the 6BR IMP's.

It's not so much the yardage you shoot that determines the twist range, as it is the weight / length of bullet you prefer.

With 6mm, slow twist (1:12 or more) is for lighter bullets. if you use 90 grain or heavier you probably want something more like 1:8.

Heavies work better out at 600 & beyond; the light weight bullets can be made to work well to 600 sometimes but barrel life will suffer owing to the velocities they need to achieve.

If you only shoot to 300 or less, 1:12 ought to be a fine choice for the mid-weight bullets: 60 to 75 grains. It's better to have a bit more twist (within reason)for a margin of safety than to have less than you need if conditions are on the edge.

For 300 yds. and less, both my 1-14's ( a Hart and a Shilen) do an excellent job with max bullet weights of 70 gr., the 68 Berger and 70 gr. Sierra #1505 being the first two choices. Nothing wrong with a 1-12 though and you should be able to go to heavier weights if wind is a problem. Another 6BR with a 1-9.25 is used with 85 gr., and a 1-8 is kept for 400 yds+ with the 95 gr. Berger VLD being the proven "winner". Prefer N133 for the lightweights, N135 for the 85 gr. and the ever reliable Varget for the 95's, a proven "winner", from this sites 6BR info. page: it works!

what I was infering is that it IS INDEED the yardage that dictates the twist (not as stated above the bullet alone)...because the yardage disctates the best bullet,,,,,then the bullet dictates the twist.
(simple sequential logic)
68's good for 100/200........80's for 300.....etc.
So first determine the predominant yardage!...then the bullet...then the twist
