6BR and H4895

After reading this forum for quite a while I decided I had to have a 6BR. After looking for a few months I finally got a prefit Shilen from Northlander for my Savage BVSS.

I ordered some 107gr SMKs for load testing and finally found some Lapua brass at Midway. For a guy who has always used Winchester brass and been fairly happy with it, this Lapua stuff is like a work of art. Very nice looking stuff.

My problem is with the powder. Varget seems to be far and away the go to powder for this cartridge. I have about a half a pound and can't find it anywhere. I saw a few loads on the 6BR reloading page using H4895, which I have plenty of. I would rather work up a good load with a powder that I'm not going to run out of.

If anyone has a good starting point for 107 SMKs and H4895 that they could share I would greatly appreciate it.

Jason, start at 28.0 grains of H4895, work up in 0.3 gr. increments and I think you'll quickly find a very good load. All the recent lots of H4895 I've tested, about 5 lots) have been very good in both the 6BR and the .308.

Jason,
I haven't used H4895 in my br, but if you can get RL-15 that powder is great in the br. I use both varget & RL-15. I started using 107smk's when I first got the br, but have since switched to Berger's, 90gr bt & 108gr bt's. With the 108's I'm going with 29.9 to 30gr of RL-15, depending on the weather being their temp sensitive & using cci-450 primers .272 neck with lapua. Using the 107smk's I was jumping 30th.off lands. I know others on this site use H4895 & will have good advice. Lots of luck...

Jason,

When Mr. Salazar speaks, the world listens!!! And for good reason. When one will adhere to the wisdom of Mr. Salazar, and have their shooting iron built by Alan Warner, the world is yours.

Thanks for all the help guys. I will get some loaded up and ready to go as soon as my dies come in. I appreciate all you guys taking the time to help me out. I'll post the results when I get everything together and get to the range.
