6BR 70 gr NBT 3700 fps???

So here I am, strongly considering a 6BR specifically for shooting Varmints. Prairie dogs would be my main focus, however every once in a while a coyote might just run out of luck. I am not interested in shooting any bullets heavier than MAYBE the 85 grain bullets as I already have 2 Tubb 6X 8 twist caliber rifles that handle the heavier 6mm bullets with excellent results.

I read some of you guys are getting 3700 fps with 70 grain bullets in your 6mm BRs. I would like to know the following..

Are these velocities commonplace or a once in while thing???
What is your barrel make, length, and recommended twist.
How many of you are actually getting 3700 fps with a 70 grain bullet?
Are these loads "high pressure" loads that require a custom action?
How does the brass hold up at these pressures?
Can anyone give me a specific reamer print number to ask Kiff for?

My thanks to all of you in advance for those posts that have been written in these pages with detailed explainations and experiences. These are much appreciated.

With one of my 6Dasher's I get the fallowing:
Brux 31" (7.8-twist)
70 Nosler BT
H335 at 37.0
CCI450
3658-fps Average with excellent accuracy (1/2-MOA at 400yds)

Same load with 55 Nosler BT averages 3953-fps

call Kiff and ask about Print # 7375,,,it is 6 BR no turn ,,.040" FB,,,it is perfect for the 85 and smaller bullets,,,Roger
PS..65-70gr bullets jamed using 4895 give ~3550 fps vel. with ease,(28" bbl),,can go higher but primer pokets get loose,,

My little BR runs like a cotton ball in the fast lane :( , I get 3225 out of the 70g Noslers.

Dmoran, what action is your barrel on please? Thanks.
The action is a trued Rem-700 (it is my 1000-BR LT-Gun).
Also shot that load/combo with a Defiance "Rebel" action, McGowen barrel (similar velocity / accuracy) a couple times.

2dogs,

I shoot the 70gr Blitzkings with N135. 3700 f/s will be a stretch. I have had many 6BR's 3500 f/s to 3550 f/s is max out of a custom action gun.

I agree that 3500-3550 is about the max for a 6BR and 70gr pills, but I would also like to add that you will do it a whole lot easier, and for longer with a slower twist barrel than is currently the vogue. My 1-12 twist BR is my favorite, by far, for the varmint game, and I have two others that are 1-8 that usually get left at home when it's time to shoot live varmints. The 1-12 will also stabilize up to the 87gr Vmax without much trouble.

If you want a varmint gun that can do that, build a dasher. Just as accurate and will give you more velocity. I would not like to be anywhere near someone shooting a straight 6br shooting 70's at 3700fps.

I like running the 55's in the dasher. Flat and fast and great for out to 300 on varmints.

My experience runs about the same - 3550 is very reasonable, but 3650 is obtainable with hot loads. I keep wanting to get back to the 6BR's & try CFE223 with 65/75 grain bullets. Seems like that might be a good performance combo. Like what was suggested, if you really want more, get a bigger cartridge - one of the stretched 6BR's or something like a 6X47L. I also agree that 12 twist is probably where you want to go for the bullets you mentioned. Good luck with it.

Some guns might be getting 3700 with a 70. Working velocity in mine with 65's is 3675-3710 depending on which bullet. That's with a 23-1/2" barrel, 14" twist, AA2230 powder.

Whether it's a custom action or not is irrelevant.

I'm floating around 3685 FPS with the 70gr. NBT out of my dasher and that is pretty much maxed out FWIW.

So what should be a reasonable tops with a 700 action, 3450ish?

I have been hitting 3580 with the 75gr Vmax, (which unfortunately I can't find anymore of) out of a 1-12 twist in a Savage PTA action, so I don't think it matters much about the action as long as the barrel is set up correctly. This was using 2015, which is a good powder choice if you aren't going to have huge temperature swings.

I get 3,500-ish with my 6mmBR in a 24" 14 twist BR, and a 65 V-MAx and a fairly stiff load of 8208.

Get a 12" twist - it will give you a lot more options - my 14" is very good with 65's V-max's but marginal with 70gr SBK's.

Thank you all for taking time to respond with your real world 6BR performance. I am going to stew on this a bit more....
