6BR 68GR FB Loads

I am wanting to test drive some new bullets in my 6BR. 105 Hybrids have been my go to round so far. I have had the itch to try some flat base rounds and see how they do. Given that they won't come close to the lands when loading, do I go off Bergers recommended length and work away from this to tune it? Or should I focus on a minimum .243 bearing surface and work in from there?? These are 68 grain match bullets by Berger.
Any help appreciated

If they are Berger 68 flat backs and you have a typical freebore that is not shot out, they'll touch.
(No boattail) In my first 6br, I tried these across four powders at four different charges (4x4 grid, 16 3-shot groups) and I think only one was in the 3s at 100. You might be surprised how well they'll work, with very little seating depth testing. I would try powders ranging from N135, H335, 8208, all the way to Varget.

If I remember correctly, I would only have about .1 to .15 bearing surface when touching lands. I am not sure what my freebore was new. I am 1200 rounds into the barrel at this time.

HOPE YOU HAVE BETTER LUCK THAN ME MY 8 TW 6BR 30'' I DID'T GET ALL OF THEM TO THE PAPER TO MUCH OVER SPIN FOR ME

Many more experienced folks here than I.
I wouldn't hesitate to go with 0.100 in the neck to get more life out of a used barrel.
When custom throating, I wouldn't go more than 1/2 to 2/3 neck engagement max, so with anything other than the 6BR (very long neck) you'll only have 40-90 thou more, anyway.
Only a couple good caveats as to why you would need/want more.
If shooting 55 blitzkings, even in a zero freebore, you won't have much more grip on the bullet.
-
Twist should be a consideration.
Twist "sensitivity" is highly bullet & barrel specific.
-
Big difference between anecdotal evidence of what worked (or didn't) for someone else and what you would do if trying to be competitive.

for an 8 twist 6BR for bugholes, get some 80 gr Berger flat base bullets with N135 or AR-Comp. if that combo doesn't shoot consistently in the .2's" @ 100 yds, you've got other problems. if you can, start at jamming .015"

So...if i jam bullet, I am only .10-.15 bearing surface. You guys think .002 is enough neck tension? I think that will be the only bushing I have without ordering something tighter to size my necks with

No, no, no! Only seat them the minimum depth which is ussually around .150", provided you have good grip / neck tension. The key to great accuracy with these bullet's in your gun will be the powder type. Many powders can do good but one or two with be great. It's always the powder.!!!
The last thing I want to do is disagree with an experienced reloader, but I was very much under the impression it was taboo to have less than your bullet diameter in the neck....
Wrong! .150" is all that is needed with proper neck tension. .003" grip.

My old Cooper 6br shot the Berger column bullets really well..in the .2s at 100 yards. They usually run 64.x grs.. It had a 14 twist. The 68 gr. Barts ultimate shot just as well.. I shot them at .005 into the lands. N135 and br4 primers.

Well....as usual I walk away a little smarter than I was to start with. I'll give it a whirl this weekend and report back.
Thanks a million folks

Well... to say this got interesting is an understatement. I took 25 rounds of my usual 105 hybrid loads and 10 rounds of 68 grain Berger FB to test drive.
I loaded the 68s from 32.5 grains of Varget up to Bergers listed max charge of 34.4. And as I am sure yall know, at 34.4, you,re very compressed.
I was on a short time frame so I figured I would check for pressure then spend more time with this later. I warmed up the barrel and myself with a few rounds of the Hybrids at 100 yards. With no chronograph, I then fired 4 rounds of the 68s into about a 1/2" hole. So much for watching for elevation changes. I broke out the chronograph and started shooting the last 6 rounds I had loaded. The last 5 of them once again went into about a 1/2" hole. Velocity started at 3455 and peaked at 3542. No pressure signs anywhere other than suspicious velocities? I wouldn't have bet anything I would reach these velocities. Needless to say, I can't wait to pursue this further.
I loaded touching the lands and had about .15-.17 bearing surface BTW. Thanks for the council on this guys.

Sometimes you have to wonder who makes up the rules.
Someone who is trying to be safe.

if I were loading for a semi auto or even mag feed, I would be very reluctant to go less than one diameter.

For a single shot rifle this rule is almost meaningless.

I'm the guy stays waaaaay inside the safe side. After the council I received on this thread and researching those that gave the council ( seemed like historically smart folks anyway) I went with it. I'm not ashamed to admit I definitely squinched and puckered up when I fired the first round.
