6BR 12 twist

What would be the best bullet for the 12 twist? For both target and Varmits. I have heard that Fowler bullets has an 80 grain that will fly right with a 12 twist? Has anyone used these and knows for sure that this is right? Lou

Lou, I have used the Berger 80g flat base varmint in a 12" twist .244 Remington and obtained excellent accuracy. As passenthru noted, the 75 V-Max is very accurate, but I have only fired it in 9 & 10" twists. The 58 V-Max has produced very good accuracy and high velocities in 9, 10 & 12" twists. My favorite crow load is the 58 at 4030 fps from a 6mm Remington. It does wonders for a crow's attitude.

I havn't shot the Berger 80gr bullets but their 88gr FB Varment/Match Grade bullets have shot well in every 6br and 6x47 Lapua I've tried them with twists from 8 to 12. I've also shoot a lot of 75gr Vmax's with great success in the dog towns.

Regards
RJ

I use a custom 80gr bullet very similar to the fowler in my 12 twist and it is fantastic. Super accurate and my first choice out to about 300m. The fowler will be superb. 70gr Nosler and sierra and 75gr V max are also all worth looking at but if you are after that slight edge in accuracy the fowlers generally have it.

If you have the length of the bullets (which can be hard to get short of measuring), this on line calculator can be used to determine stability. I have the Miller formula on a spreadsheet as well. I think it may be somewhat on the conservative side.

Berger of course publishes the minimum required twist, so just check their site for that information.

ourway77,

The 80 gr Fowler and Berger would work great in your 12 tw. I like the 70gr Sierria Blitzking for varmint all powered by VV N135.

Thanks everyone. I really love the Savage 6BR F classI am still working on loads and powder, so far accuracy is so so. Still looking for the rifles sweet spot? Powder etc. Lou

The 80g Winchester is a really tough bullet. A freind loaded two boxes and killed 19 out of 20 shells in one box.

You really don't need super accuracy, just great bullet placement.

Hornady makes a 70 Sp that is really tough also, I am not speaking of the 70g SX.

I also suspect that your 85g Sierra BTHP load that fell apart at 300 yards was due to wind. I shot those 85g Sierra BTHP's at 3150 out of a 6MM Rem on rock chucks and p.dogs out to 550 yards with great luck out of Hart, Douglas, and Shilen 1-12 twists.

Can you give me a little more information on those 80 grain Fowlers that seem to work so well in the 1:12 twist? I'm going to try and find some but given where I live I'll need as much info as possible to order them in. Thanks.

Can't buy them - I'm from Canada. For some reason the US government has decided that we can't buy such dangerous things as bullets from US manufacturers. Well, without paying a zillion dollars in tax (read "export fees")

It chafes a bit to have a Canuckian toss a barb at our US gov't for impinging firearms freedoms.

I have a 12 twist 6br and it shoots the 80 grain Fowlers just fine. I've had one opportunity to take it out to 500 yards and it held less then MOA for me; normally my shooting is limited to 2-300 yards. I'm using Federal match primers and H4895.

No offense intended I assure you. Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. :)

Just dissapointing to be in a situation where I can't buy products that are readily available to everyone else unless I pay a special tax - on top of all the other taxes we already have up here. :P
