6br 107smk starting ladder

Would 28gr of Varget be safe to start a ladder test for a straight 6br with 107smk jammed into the lands? New to the 6br, while I'm waiting to bring my rifle home I could load up a test ladder. Of course I will seat everything long and can reseat when I can check distance to lands in the rifle.

Shouldn’t be any problems at all. If me, I would start at 29 and expect to find something in the 29.7 to 30.2 range.

This particular lot was shooting good at 29.3gr. Powder was given to me by a friend who moved on from 6br to 6gt and slower powders. He was also shooting jammed. Maybe I'll start around 28.5gr or so.

I am shooting two 6brxs, one jammed .016, the other .017. Both 107 SMK and Varget. I start with square mark from the lands and back up until they make a hole. Good luck.

That's exactly where I found the sweet spot for the 107 and Varget in my 6br with 26 inch Shilen 8 twist, 29.3 grs and 205M. My barrel prefers .008 off.

I've been trying to decide between the 205M and 7-1/2 primers, I have several K of each in inventory, seems both have done well with this combo. Bolt is currently not bushed, so maybe I'll start with the Rem primers until I get it bushed.

RL-15 done great blowing out brass in my 26 in. barrel 1-8 Tw. but I think I'm gonna give Varget a chance. Guess I'll stick with the BR-4 primers. Seems to be doing o k as well.

EDIT: Wondering why the latest Sierra Manual list 27.1 gr. as the max load for Varget with the 107 gr. Must have got hold of a fast batch while testing.

Making up a test batch doesn’t take that much time so I would wait until you have the chamber in front of you.
You should probably break in the barrel prior to serious load development.
here is a fairly typical ladder with 107 smk and Varget where the nodes appear

Good idea to bush firing pin. Last year I tuned 2 6BRXs and a 6PPC for ES. All three were in the teens. Now all three are 5 or less and the answer in every rifle was Fed 205M, a primer I had never used. You never know what might help you until you work on it and try things yourself.
