600 yrd IBS...

I just shot in a 600yrd shoot for the first time and I really had a blast, but a 22-250AI shooting 50 grain bullets is not going to compete for top finishes. My best groups were 3.8 inches and my worst was 13,wind,wind,wind). I was happy since this is just a coyote gun and my first atempt at paper that far.

Here now is the question. I have a rifle being built by SGR rifles, this was intended to be another coyote gun in 20-250 but now I would like to make a switch barrel out of it in another chambering that could at least be competitive in a 600yrd match. I am thinking either a 6 Dasher or 6.5-284. Maybe something else?

I have a BAT repeater action, McMillan A-5 stock, Nightforce 8-32 NXS, Jewell triger and want to stay with a Lilja 5 tapper. Open to any coments.

dmoran, I see what you are talking about with the A-5 not being able to ride in the bags. I am just at a starting point with something I have, before I try a full blown bench gun that is only use full from a bench. If you know what I mean. Thank You.

FroggyOne2- I am still learning, Please give me your reasoning on why the 6.5-284 is a bad choice. It's not that I have to be talked out of it as the Dasher is what I'm leaning to right now, with the 105 Berger as the bullet of choice.

Van,
The reason the 6.5-284 might be a bad choice is that it is a barrel burner. For improved barrel life I believe the 6.5x55 improved is a better choice for 6.5 bullets. Some guys have done very well with the 6mm Dasher and even the good old 6mmBR.

When I built my first light gun last winter I went with the 7mm SAUM because I am a little more confident in it at 1000yds than the smaller cals even though I havn't shot a 1000yd match with it yet. For 600yds it is hard to beat the 6 Dasher although the 6x47 Lapua looks good too.

Thanks for coming down and shooting with us, I hope to see you again next month.
