600 Yard Benchrest, what has changed?

I remember when you could win a match with a 2.5" agg. Today in many matches you must shoot a sub 2" agg. to win.

What has changed?

Loading.... When I first started I talked to some guys who were once on top of the game, they couldn't believe all the extra work we are putting in now. Back in their day, they weren't double weighing charges, seating on a force indicator press, or any of the other hi tech methods we use. Technology and advancement in loading precision ammo I believe is what made the difference.

Competition, bullets, barrels....desire to win. Keep on testing until you find the magic, then you have your stuff used up and get to start over. It's like every other sport, it takes money, time, dedication to become better every day. If you do not continue to push yourself and look/try new things you will not get there and someone with the desire, time and resources to get there will. Theres no free lunch....most will starve.

I've only been at this for a few years but believe improvements in BR is similar to most other competitive sports. Someone sets a standard/record and others try to beat it. As you know, successful BR shooters pay attention to lots of details. In years past, the Juenke was used more than it is today (assumption). I think today you will find more folks measuring bearing surface, base to ogive, seating stem to ogive, etc. Were these practices done in years past?

If a new shooter to BR started today and only read articles and match reports from 10-15 years ago they might choose a 6.5-284 and run it in a sleeved Remington action. Today that combination can likely do well but would it compete against a Dasher fired out of a custom action?

In 10-15 years from now we will likely be asking the same question. Will Reloader 16 and or Shiraz/Norma brass lead to smaller groups or a new wildcat cartridge? Will the new BAT action make a splash?

I look forward to the changes and to the successes as fellow BR shooters continue to find ways to shoot smaller groups and higher scores.
