60 to 80 grain flat base bullets for 22/250AI, 8 twist

The BR guys say flat base bullets are better for 300 yds and less. Berger lists a 64 gr 224 flat base but nobody seems to have them, including Berger. Am I chasing my tail....again? May I expect similar 300 yard accuracy from boattail as flat base?

Howdy !

FWIW -

A boat tail bullet ( esp VLDs ) are often chosen specifically to help retain vel / energy / trajectory " flatness " @ extended ranges.

In .224" calibre and using a case like .22-250AI, it'd be a wayz out there... until the BT benefits really kick-in. Perhaps 425+ yd.
For 300 & under, one would not have-to have a BT bullet, to be successful.

Yes, I've read where FB's are purported to be more accurate for close-range BR than BTs. But ...I also see some BTs ( 6mm ) doing well
w/ the PPC.

IMHO - shooter-induced errors will affect group sizes more than any accuracy difference between a great quality FB and a great quality BT,
especially as range increases.

One may also want to consider the impact that boat tail encroachment into the powder space might have ? Powder charge wt, powder columne positioning, obtainable chamber presssure & vel.... often affect the load; when a switch is made between use of an FB and a BT of similar cal
and weight. What bullet/ seating depth / cartridge oal was the gun set-up for ?

Anywayz.... don't be afraid of using a BT.

Not to put salt on your wound but they shot real well in everything(with correct twist) I ever shot them in! Sorry :-[

The best groups I've ever shot at 300 when testing my short line ammo for my service rifle AR was with the 64 Berger FB. The only reason I did not continue using them in matches was the cost factor. The only ones that equaled them later were the 73 grains FB made for me by Randy Robinette from BIB.

Shot the 73 BIB FB at 600, they held well, did not clean the target, but shot HM score with them. This is with 8 twist barrel. Just for fun, last summer I tried the same load again at 600 in a faster twist, some of them did not make it to the target. The older J4 jackets did not hold up to the faster twist and rougher throat.

Like always....it all depends on the rifle. Some rifles will shoot BT bullets, some won't. One is not necessarily superior to the other just because a manufacturer's marketing dept says so. BC doesn't mean squat if one's rifle won't group. Mathematics are fine and dandy, but when it's put to the paper, hey, you gotta be the judge of that.

I have much better results with FB bullets with my 223s(AR & bolt). They will not groups BTs worth a darn. I've tested my 223s out to 525 yds for target, out to 400 with coyotes, and its easy to see the FB wins for those rifles. My other rifles which are 243 Win and larger.....they'll shoot both FB & BT.

Is there any chance the bullets may be deforming a bit and affecting accuracy? Any idea what kind of speed specs for your bullet?

Thanks for the replies. I contacted Berger and they suggested I get on a back order list. Which I have done.

I was hoping there was somebody out there making a 75-90 grain .224 flat base bullet. Anyway, I have enough different bullets to keep me busy for a month or two.

Subjective question of the day: What bullet have you found the most accurate in a 8 twist, 22/250AI?

From my 28" 1-8 SS 5-groove in .22-35Rem, I shot 75"A"-Max exclusively for both target & live varmint.

I only had one instance of " shoot-through " on groundhog ( a less than ideally positioned 200yd shot ).
The shot killed the 'hog clean, but did still exit the animal.

Based on that experience & my shooting style/needs, I myself did not feel compelled to go any heavier than 75gr, for my dual-role .224" cal bullet choice.

Speer makes a 22cal. 70 grain round nose, flat base bullet that has the BC of a 2X4 but it shoots! might see it in stock sometime?

If Bubba can split straws by throwing a handaxe from 20 yards.......the probability of Leroy doing it by using Bubba's axe is probably about ten million to one!!
