6 X 47 Lapua No-Turn Neck

Would like to hear what no-turn neck diameter seems to work best for this caliber. I am going to have a reamer made & haven't quite decided what neck diameter to spec. My measurement over neck with bullet seated averaged .2705, so I would think .273 or .274 would be a prudent choice. Your help would be appreciated.

Joe, I like .273 for a no-turn, as my loaded rounds were coming up right at 0.2710" with a fatty Sierra seated,0.2434")

Also, I found that the neck thickens about 0.0005" upon necking to 6mm.

HTH,
Jason

I'm seeing about the same thing as ya'll are. Dave Kiff sent me a print with .272 neck, which would probably work just fine. But on a no-turn, I prefer a little extra clearance in case of brass variations. I am inclined to get reamer ground with .273 or .274 neck. In my experience, reamers end up cutting slightly bigger than spec'd, so a .273 would probably end up cutting about .2735 or so, which should give .002 - .003 clearance. Make sense?

Joe, We've done a few 6x47 Lapua's here now. Also I did one for a shop rifle set up as an F-Class gun and about 4 weeks ago I put a new barrel on my prone rifle. Both guns shoot awesome and the reamer I spec. out has a .273 neck. I feel any smaller is to tight. My loaded rounds are coming in at .270 or just a tad bigger on the necks.

Joe, Dave Kiff went with a .273" neck on my 6x47 reamer - haven't had a problem with it in two of my own barrels, one a Bartlein .237" bore/8-twist, the 2nd a Krieger .236" bore/7.5-twist), nor in a customer's Krieger .236"/8-twist. All shoot great; I'd go the same route if doing it again. Our Dasher reamers have .274" necks, and still shoot awesome at 600-1000yds., so I'm not inclined to go smaller on the neck for a perceived advantage.

Thanks for all the replies, you are reinforcing what I was thinking myself. I have a 243 AI reamer that got ground marginally too small in the body a few years ago that I'm going to send to Dave for regrinding to the 6X47. It should have plenty meat everywhere to make this reamer.

Joe, I agree with most of the folks here - we got a .272 NK reamer for my pal, Tom - it worked GREAT for the initial lot of brass . . . not so for the latest Lot, which, using the same bullets, leaves only 0.0005" of total clearance! So, for the new barss Lot, Tom has to lightly turn the necks. RG

Joe,

as the world knows, I am not a serious benchrest shooter, however, My Hugh Henriksen 6X47 reamer is a .273 no neck turn reamer.

It works.

I went with the PTG reamer from the 6mmhot.com website and it specs a .275 neck. It is a sub-quarter minute one-hole gun at 100...

My big concern has been the quality of the necks on Laua 6.5X47 brass and the amount of turning needed to make them concentric...
